1 Having chickens at P.V.P.S.
Knowing how to look after our chickens and keep them safe!

2 Chicken Facts The breed of our chickens at Pascoe Vale P.S. are called Isa Browns. They are from America. They are friendly and quite tame. They are good egg layers. They enjoy roaming around the Children's Garden!

3 Benefits of having chickens at school
The eggs they lay can be used for cooking at school and we can sell them to raise money for the school. They make excellent pets & kids love pets! Their dirty straw can fertilise the gardens. They eat a lot of our food scraps. We can learn about chickens and use them to do other learning activities.

4 What chickens need to be happy
Fresh air Calmness Fresh water Food and shelter Exercise: Be free to run around A clean home Fresh straw

5 Keeping chickens safe at school
Be nice and quiet around the chickens and treat them kindly. Chickens can get scared and get stressed. Don’t chase the chickens. Don’t go near them when they are laying eggs. Don’t pick them up unless you have permission from a teacher. Give the chickens space and don’t crowd around them. If you see someone being mean to a chicken, tell a teacher.

6 What not to feed our chickens Some of this food includes:
Eggplant, tomato, salty and fatty foods, rotten food. Citrus: like oranges and lemons. Onions, dry and uncooked beans and dry rice. Chocolate, lollies, avocado skins, meat, egg shells, blackberries. Apple seeds, sweet pea, rhubarb and potatoes.

7 REMEMBER: THEY ARE OUR CHICKENS! TREAT THEM LIKE THEY ARE YOUR OWN PETS. IF YOU LOVE THEM THEN THEY WILL LOVE YOU IN RETURN!

8 This PowerPoint presentation has been proudly brought to you by grade 3/4S.

9 Your turn: What will YOU do to make sure the chickens are happy at P.V.P.S? What other ways do you think that the chickens will be beneficial for our school? What do you know about chickens? Can you think of any learning activities that could involve the chickens (such as in maths, writing, science, reading or the environment and sustainability)? How do you feel about having chickens at your school? Draw a picture of the chickens. Write a poem about the chickens.
