THE PLANT KINGDOM Woodstown High School Biology
2
CARL LINNAEUS BOTANIST (person who studies plants) Designed the system used for CLASSIFYING plants Known as the “Father of Ecology”
3
SYSTEM of CLASSIFICATION 1. DOMAIN 2. KINGDOM 3. PHYLUM 4. CLASS 5. ORDER 6. FAMILY 7. GENUS 8. SPECIES
4
DOMAINS All living things are GROUPED into THREE domains. BACTERIA ARCHAEA EUKARYA (having EUKARYOTIC cells…plants & animals)
5
PLANT KINGDOM VASCULAR Plants that have tube- like cells used to transport food and water throughout the plant XYLEM ---carries water from roots to stem and leaves PHLOEM ---carries food (sugar)from leaves to roots NON-VASCULAR Plants that DO NOT have tube-like cells to transport food and water throughout the plant. Plants that DO NOT have leaves, stems or roots. They get water through a root- like structure called RHIZOIDS Plants that grow in damp, shady areas on sides of trees and rocks (MOSS)
6
FERNS Ferns are a seedless VASCULAR plant. Over 12,000 known species of ferns. Leaves of a fern are called FRONDS SORI are the cluster of reproductive spores on the under side of the frond
7
CONIFERS Conifers are GYMNOSPERMS, they have SEEDS but NO flowers. Leaves (needle-like) remain GREEN all year Reproductive organs are found in CONES (pollen & eggs). Cones produce SEEDS Conifer trees grow large & tall…used for LUMBER & PAPER

CONES

FLOWERING TREES & PLANTS Trees & plants that come from SEEDS and have FLOWERs are known as ANGIOSPERM They have vascular cells for transporting food & water. Over 250,000 known species The FLOWER contains the reproductive organs that produce SEEDS.
