Daily Life in Ancient Rome Roman Homes Lower class lived in apartment houses called flats Upper class lived in single-family homes with the whole family (great grandparents, grandparents, parents and kids) Atrium- a courtyard in the middle of large homes Roman Religion Believed in many different gods and goddesses Worshipped same gods as the Greeks, but gave them different names Prayed to gods and brought offerings Built temples to honor gods and created myths (stories) to explain nature Roman Clothing Men and boys wore short, belted tunics Girls wore short tunics, and long tunics called stolas when they were older Women wore perfume, makeup and jewelry Roles of Men, Women and Children Men Women Took care of the children Went shopping at the forum Boys Went to school Learned to read, write and count Older boys learned Latin Girls Learned to clean, cook and weave Were heads of the household Spent time at the forum (the main marketplace and business center Adult free men could vote

Ancient Rome was a REPUBLIC It had a representative democracy Three branches of government A group to make laws A group to carry out the laws A group to enforce the laws Like our legislative, executive and judicial branches The United States has a representative democracy. (a government where people elect a smaller group of citizens to make rules and laws)
