Purpose Intended Audience and Presenter Contents Proposed Presentation Length Intended audience is all distributor partners and VARs Content may be customized as appropriate May also be leveraged by MNAs who sell through VAR channel This module is comprised of 4 lessons Speaker Notes included This presentation is intended to be approximately 25 minutes long It is intended to be used together with a 30 minute lab This presentation is part of a 6 module series providing technical training for SBS 2011 Essentials

Name Title Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials Product Features Module 3: Server Management & Monitoring

Module 3: Agenda Lesson 1: Monitoring the Server and Client Computers Lesson 2: Backing Up and Restoring the ServerLesson 3: Managing Server StorageLesson 4: Creating Server Shared Folders

MONITORING THE SERVER AND CLIENT COMPUTERS Lesson 1

SBS 2011 Essentials Health Monitoring Proactive Health Monitoring for: Servers, both SBS itself and other servers Clients, both PCs and Macs* Working with Alerts Notifications are displayed server and affected clients Alert notifications can be set via email Describe alert condition Provides steps for resolution; Provides repair action when available Health Monitoring is Extensible Third parties can leverage monitoring capabilities for their own applications running in the SBS environment *Health alerts for Macs are a subset of those available for PCs

Dashboard Alerts (Server) In the Dashboard, the Alert Viewer displays alerts for the entire SBS network  Alerts can be filtered:  By source (computer)  By severity (critical, warning, info)  Sample alerts include:  Firewall status  Anti-malware status  Software update status  Disk space utilization

Launchpad Alerts (Client) From a user’s Launchpad, the Alert Viewer only displays alerts specific to their computer  Alerts can be filtered by severity (critical, warning, info)  Alert notifications can be turned off in Launchpad settings  Proscriptive guidance provided to the user can reduce administrator intervention  Users can ‘ignore’ an alert locally  The alert will also be ‘ignored’ in the Dashboard

BACKING UP AND RESTORING THE SERVER Lesson 2

Server Backup Add hard drive(s) to Server Backup  Attach new hard drive to server & designate for backup use (not storage)  External drives recommended; internal drives can be used  Using multiple drives allows for offsite rotation, improving data protection Configure Server Backup  Simple wizard quickly establishes backup settings:  Backup destination  Schedule  Items & Drives to protect

Server Restore Restore Server Data  Wizard simplifies recovery process  Restore from most recent or previous backups  Recover individual files, folders, or entire drives Server Recovery  Performs “bare metal” restore  Boot from installation DVD and choose repair or create a bootable USB recovery flash drive Server Recovery  Provides for “factory reset”

Client Backup  Client backup for PCs is automatically configured when they are connected to the SBS environment  Client backup settings are configured using the Dashboard  Backup time window (default is between 6pm and 9am)  Retention policy  Users can also manually initiate a backup from the Launchpad  Backups allow for restore of files and folders or the entire PC (bare metal restore)

Client Restore Restore Files, Folders, or Drives  Administrator launches Dashboard from client computer  Select items for restore from a backup set Full System Restore  Boot client computer from Recovery media  Select computer name and backup set

MANAGING SERVER STORAGE Lesson 3

Storage Storage is based on Windows Server 2008 R2 Storage System Inherited Storage Features:  Multi-Drive support  Inbuilt Software Raid Support  Supports Hardware RAID SBS Essentials Storage Features:  Move Folder Wizard  Previous Versions  Restore Protected Folders

Expanding Server Storage  Alert is shown after new unformatted Hard Drive is added (Formatted drives will automatically show as available drives)  Formatting can be started via a link in the alert  Can be used for RAID drives (either software or hardware)  For drives of 2TB, a new partition will be created* *Max partition size is 2TB

Adding Server Backup Drives SBS server backup uses Windows Server Backup  Hard drives are used as backup destinations  Tapes and tape drives are not supported  Assign drives for use with backup on the Server Folders and Hard Drives page in the Dashboard  Use multiple external hard drives to enable offsite rotation

CREATING SERVER SHARED FOLDERS Lesson 4

Creating Shared Folders  Server Folders and Hard Drives page in the Dashboard, Server Folders sub-tab  In Server Folder Tasks, Add a folder  Enter folder name  Determine the drive destination  Assign user permissions  Include in server backup

Shared Folder Properties The Dashboard simplifies shared folder management  Rename the folder; update its description  Access user access permissions  Enable/disable Shadow Copies

Moving Shared Folders Shared folders can be moved to new hard drives  Shared Folder moved via “Move Folder Wizard”  Ensures all properties and data are moved correctly  Select the folder to move in the folder tab  Click on “move folder” and follow the wizard.  Choose Destination Drive  Ensure you add the new folder to backup when completed

MODULE REVIEW
