DECS Community IT DIVISION OF ENGINEERING COMPUTING SERVICES Michigan State University College of Engineering

2 DECS SERVICES DECS is the technology resource and support unit for the College of Engineering All engineering faculty, staff, and students are provided a computer account in engineering This account includes: -engineering e-mail (separate from mail.msu.edu) -disk storage -backups -access to all engineering software and resources Forward mail.msu.edu to egr.msu.edu This will also allow you to take advantage of SPAM filtering!

3 DECS SERVICES Faculty & students have several separate areas of storage space available: – Home directories, a.k.a. the M: drive – Research space on a separate file system – Web space – Class space, which is removed at the end of each semester – Separate space for Incoming Mail on the central mail server

4 DECS SERVICES For all questions and requests visit www.egr.msu.edu/decs or 1325EB, e-mail support@egr.msu.edu or call 353-8891 www.egr.msu.edu/decs The Support Office is open: – Fall & Spring: Monday – Thursday 8am to 9pm Friday 8am to 5pm Saturday closed Sunday 4pm to 8pm – Summer & Breaks: Monday – Friday 8am to 5pm

6 Web Development Support & Resources: – The development team provides assistance with the Web, database, and other development projects – Several different databases are available, as well as development resources

7 ENGINEERING & ERC NETWORKS MSU and the College of Engineering use Ethernet, TCP/IP based networks to provide network service and access to the Internet. The Engineering and Research Complex networks are connected to the campus backbone, a high- speed fiber network, that runs at 1 Gigabit, or 1000 Megabits, per second; access to 10 Gigabit is in process. – 10/100 Mbps switched/dedicated connections are provided in both buildings. – Each connection uses CAT5 twisted pair cabling, similar to a telephone cable and jack, and will operate at 10 or 100 Mbps – By request 1 Gigabit to research labs.

8 ENGINEERING & ERC NETWORKS Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is used to assign addresses to computers automatically. A Web-based registration system is used to provide instantaneous and automatic access to the network and the Internet.

9 ENGINEERING & ERC NETWORKS Wireless networking is available in: – Jolly Road – Engineering Building – Engineering Research Complex (ERC) North – ERC South – MBI Building The wireless network uses the IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n standard “Wi-Fi” to provide 11-300 Mbps wireless networking. Access is public, however, like the wired network, registration is required before Internet access is provided.

10 FIREWALL Engineering is implementing a VPN Juniper SSL VPN is available, Visit: https://vgr.egr.msu.eduhttps://vgr.egr.msu.edu Remote desktop to DECS managed computers is available upon request Remote access to the Engineering network is restricted by being able to SSH to scully.egr.msu.edu

Mail aliases for groups, as well as mailing lists for monitoring e-mail to groups are available. We support a Spam Handler designed similar to the Virus Handler to discard or filter spam messages. Virus handlers have been developed. They are designed to discard a virus. There are no quotas on mail boxes. If you receive an email requesting that you provide your password, this is a phishing attempt. Do NOT respond! DECS/MSU will never ask for your password. 11 MAIL SERVICES

12 ALWAYS UPGRADING Each year new computers are purchased and installed in the engineering labs. The seats being replaced are then recycled into offices and research labs for faculty, staff, and students. Requests are made through department chairs. Each year new printers are purchased and installed in the instructional labs and the old ones are recycled to offices and research labs.

13 CHECK OUT EQUIPMENT Visit 1325 to check out: – Laptops – Tablet PCs – Macs – Projectors – Digital cameras – Video cameras Also use our: – Plotters – Laminator – Color & black/white printers – Scanners – Mass CD/DVD burners – 3D Printer

14 THIRTEEN TWENTY Student collaboration room with: – Smartboard – Computers – Group work space – Lounge area – Large screen TV (with cable) – Comfort seating

15 BACKUPS & STORAGE A network filer to provide high speed, scalable, and reliable network storage is in production. – Provides file snapshots as far back as seven weeks for home and three weeks for research and provides immediate retrieval of deleted data. Back-ups are performed daily.

16 SOFTWARE DECS will install and manage any software application that is needed for research and/or instruction whether it be in the UNIX and/or PC labs. – Allow four weeks for installation and testing before production. Through Microsoft's Developers Network Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) Microsoft's software is available to all faculty and students. – The licensing and information is available at: www.egr.msu.edu/eceshop/MSDNAA www.egr.msu.edu/eceshop/MSDNAA For more information on software, check out DECS website: www.egr.msu.edu/decswww.egr.msu.edu/decs

17 MANAGING YOUR OWN SYSTEMS Be sure that your system is updated and patched regularly. Install and run virus scanners. Follow guidelines to secure the systems on the network. When a system is infected and poses a risk to other systems on the network, it will be blocked from the network.

18 Visit DECS for all of your technology support needs! Contact DECS at: 1325 Engineering Building (517) 353-8891 www.egr.msu.edu/decs support@egr.msu.edu
