1 Compare decimal fractions 3.NF.3d
NYS Math Module 1 Lesson 13 I can: Subtract decimals 5.NBT.7 Find the product 5.NBT.7 Compare decimal fractions 3.NF.3d Objective: Divide decimals by single-digit whole numbers involving easily identifiable multiples using place value understanding and relate to a written method.

2 Sprint – Subtract Decimals
**9 minutes** On your mark, get set, GO!

3 Say the multiplication sentence in unit form.
Find the Product Say the multiplication sentence in unit form. 4 x 3 = ____ 12 ones 4 x 0.2 = ____ 8 tenths Write the multiplication sentence. 4 x 3.2 = ____ 12.8 4 x 3.1 = ____ 12.4

4 4 x 3.21 = ____ 9 x 0.1 = ____ 9 x 0.03 = ____ 9 x 2.13 = ____ 12.84
Solve the following problems. 4 x 3.21 = ____ 12.84 9 x 0.1 = ____ 0.9 9 x 0.03 = ____ 0.27 9 x 2.13 = ____ 19.17

5 Solve the following problems.
4.012 x 4 = ____ 16.048

6 Solve the following problems.
5 x = _____

7 < = > Compare Decimal Fractions 13.78___13.86 0.78___78/100
Compare the numbers using the greater than, less than, or equal signs. < 13.78___13.86 = 0.78___78/100 > 439.3___4.39

8 < 5.08 ___fifty-eight tenths
Compare the numbers using the greater than, less than, or equal signs. < 5.08 ___fifty-eight tenths

9 < Thirty-five and 9 thousandths ___ 4 tens
Compare the numbers using the greater than, less than, or equal signs. < Thirty-five and 9 thousandths ___ 4 tens

10 2 x 4 = 8, so our answer has to be around $8
Word Problem Louis buys 4 chocolates. Each chocolate costs $ Louis multiplies 4 x 235 and gets Place the decimal to show the cost of the chocolates and explain your reasoning. 2 x 4 = 8, so our answer has to be around $8 2.35 4 X $9.40

11 Concept Development 0.9 ÷ 3 = 0.3 Divide 9 tenths into 3 equal groups.
0.1 Divide 9 tenths into 3 equal groups. How many tenths are in each group? 3 tenths 0.9 ÷ 3 = 0.3 Read the number sentence using unit form.

12 0.24 ÷ 4 = 0.06 Divide 24 hundredths into 4 equal groups.
How many hundredths are in each group? 6 hundredths Read the number sentence using unit form. 0.24 ÷ 4 = 0.06 24 hundredths ÷ 4 = 6 hundredths

13 0.032 ÷ 8 = 0.004 Divide 32 thousandths into 8 equal groups.
How many thousandths are in each group? 4 thousandths Read the number sentence using unit form. 0.032 ÷ 8 = 0.004

14 0.3 1.5 ÷ 5 = _____ Read this in unit form.
dividend ÷ divisor = quotient 1.5 ÷ 5 = _____ 0.3 15 tenths divided by 5 = 3 tenths What is 15 tenths divided by 5?

15 Which way of renaming 1.05 is most useful when dividing by 5?
Read this in unit form. 1.05 ÷ 5 = _____ 0.21 Is there another way to decompose this quantity (1.05)? 1 one and 5 hundredths or 10 tenths and 5 hundredths Which way of renaming 1.05 is most useful when dividing by 5? 10 tenths and 5 hundredths 10 tenths ÷ 5 = 2 tenths 5 hundredths ÷ 5 = 1 hundredth So, the answer is 2 tenths and 1 hundredth = 0.21

16 Which way of renaming 3.015 is most useful when dividing by 5?
Read this in unit form. 0.603 3.015 ÷ 5 = _____ Is there another way to decompose this quantity (3.015)? 3 ones and 15 thousandths or 30 tenths and 15 thousandths Which way of renaming is most useful when dividing by 5? 30 tenths and 15 thousandths 30 tenths ÷ 5 = 6 tenths 15 thousandths ÷ 5 = 3 thousandths So, the answer is 6 tenths and 3 thousandths = 0.603

17 What relationships do you notice between these two equations?
4.8 ÷ 6 = 0.8 48 ÷ 6 = 8 4.8 x 10 = 48 0.8 x 10 = 8 How are they alike? How can knowing 48 ÷ 6 = 8, help you answer 4.8 ÷6? If you know the fact, you will know the answer, but you have to remember that they are different units.

18 Solve this problem. 408 ÷ 8 = 51 Use the answer above to help you solve the following problem. 4.08 ÷ 8 = 0.51 How are the problems similar? 408 is 100 times more than 4.08 and 51 is 100 times more than 0.51

19 Solve this problem. 63,021 ÷ 7 = 9,003 ÷ 7 = 9.003

20 Think of your multiplication facts.
Problem Set Review Example #1 – Complete the sentence with the correct number of units 0.3 7 groups of ___ tenths is ÷ 7 = ___ 3 Think of your multiplication facts. 7 x ___ = 21 Example #2 – Complete the number sentence. Express the quotient in units and then in standard form. 24.26 ÷ 2 = ______ones ÷ 2+ _____ hundredths ÷ 2 = ______ones + ______ hundredths = ___________ 24 26 12 13 12.13

21 Example #3 – 9 0.9 Example #4 – 81 ÷ 9 = ____ 8,1 ÷ 9 = _____
Find the quotients. Describe the relationships you notice. 9 0.9 81 ÷ 9 = ____ ,1 ÷ 9 = _____ 8.1 is 10 times smaller than 81 and so is the quotient (0.9 x10 = 9). Example #4 – Are quotients below reasonable? Why or why not? 6.3 ÷ 7 = 9 No, 6.3 is less than 7. If we were splitting it into 7 groups there would be less than 1 whole in each group.
