Welcome to the Michigan Training to Prevent Adult Abuse and Neglect

Michigan’s Journey Michigan has a long rich history of person-centered culture transformation 1996 – Dr. Thomas speaks at Office for Services to the Aging conference 1998 – First Certified Eden Associate training held in Michigan 2000 – $10M grant funding available for culture change BEAM and MI Star Forum established 2006 to present – Several Green House projects, and innovative small house models 2009 – State PCP definition and curriculum developed 2011 – CON incorporated person centered approach 2015 – Beginning draft of reimbursement system that rewards person centered approach

First it was AANP… CMS grant award funded development of the Adult Abuse and Neglect Prevention (AANP) training 2 year program 66 Certified AANP trainers 460+ training sessions conducted 8,000 long term care workers trained

AANP Evaluation AANP formally evaluated by Michigan State University
Results include: 92% indicated AANP training improved ability to recognize abuse % stated they reported suspected abuse more often because of training % perceived AANP training improved their ability to prevent potentially abusive situations from developing % indicated they used prevention techniques learned in the training and of these, 96% indicated that it helped prevent abusive situations from occurring

And then there were FIMS
Grant, funding and trainings ended AANP curriculum was rewritten into twelve, 1-hour modules Modules are called the FIMS (Facilitator Instructional Modules) Intended to be used as staff in-services FIMS modules are available free of charge at: prevention-training

And then there was BTBQ….
2011 – Innovations grant BTBQ (Better Training, Better Quality) Pilot project to develop curriculum and certificate program for HHA/PCA 77-hour curriculum developed

The State of Indiana Adapted BTBQ version of the Abuse training Conducted 3-day Train the Trainer for key, long term care leaders including: Corporate representatives, QIO’s, Alzheimer’s Association, University nurse educators, CNA educators, Regulators, Bureau of Healthcare representatives

Current Michigan TPAAN Project
Home and Community Based Service providers Conduct Train the Trainer - Educate 40 Trainers Each trainer to educate 50 people – 2,000 people in total Adapt curriculum for nursing home use Apply for CMP grant later this year

Work with state to clarify definitions and reporting guidelines – articulate a clear message 3-day Train the Trainer for key long term supports and services stakeholders Reinforce Person-Centered concept
