T SPP1788 “DynamicEarth“ Workshop, GFZ Potsdam, 3 July 2014 No. 3 A number of German institutions had announced their interest in validating the Swarm data products. A common proposal for data validation, coordinated by the Swarm Project Office, was submitted to ESA in October 2011. This proposal was approved to full extent by ESA in February 2012. In response to this success the DLR Space Administration showed their willingness to partially support the Cal/Val activities.

Euler Angle Estimations The nominal orientation of the vector data with respect to the star sensor readings is based on calibrations run on ground prior to the launch. However, our experience from Ørsted and CHAMP satellite missions is that the orientation parameters have to be re-estimated after launch. These are the so-called “Euler-angles” between the vector magnetic data in the instrument frame and the celestial system of reference associated with the star cameras. We plan therefore to use our experience and apply the tools developed during the CHAMP satellite mission, to address this problem of Euler angles determination. Optical bench on Swarm, with three STR and a single VFM.

Swarm Validation Workshop March 28 th, 2014, ESRIN 8/11 Swarm Science and Data Validation: Ionosphere/Thermosphere Aims at Level 1B Swarm data validation by various means, which complement each other. They comprise both direct comparison with different independent observations and plausibility tests of multi-point data applied to basic electrodynamic equations. Validation tasks in particular: Direct comparison of plasma measurements during overflights with ground-based observations (Digisonde Juliusruh/Rügen, radars) Ion drift measurements (EFI) at mid- and high-latitudes related to various independent observations: incoherent scatter radars (e.g. EISCAT), Digisonde Juliusruh; coherent radars (e.g., PolarDARN) Validation of multi-point gradient estimation techniques for three satellites' constellation

T SPP1788 “DynamicEarth“ Workshop, GFZ Potsdam, 3 July 2014 No. 10 Summary The German Cal/Val activities cover all the prime Swarm objectives: Magnetometry, Ionosphere/Thermosphere, Geodesy. Information about instrument performance may be obtained after some time from the topic coordinators: The active Swarm Cal/Val phase has started last month and is scheduled for one year for the German groups.
