CADGME Pécs, 2007 Teaching Fourier series, partial differential equations and their applications – in less time with more CAS Ildikó Perjési-Hámori – Csaba Sárvári Department of Mathematics Pollack Mihály Engineering Faculty University of Pécs, Pécs, Hungary

CADGME Pécs, 2007 Our talk concerns with: changes in the mathematics curriculum in the Engineering Faculty at Pécs University the new tools used in the teaching of mathematics the didactical questions in relation to CAS the outcomes of our project Motto: ”Some mathematics becomes more important because technology requires it. Some mathematics becomes less important because technology replaces it. Some mathematics becomes possible because technology allows it.” (Bert Waits)

CADGME Pécs, 2007 Changes in the mathematics curriculum at Pécs University, in the Engineering Faculty the faculty has launched a two-level educational system in conjunction with the Bologna process, in 2006, some mathematics contact lessons are at the basic level - the required mathematics themes are not reduced there is a demand to connect the undergraduate mathematics  with practice (first of all, who will go to the labor market after graduating at Bachelor level),  with the Master level mathematics and engineering subjects.

CADGME Pécs, 2007 The used new tools in the teaching of mathematics We have used MAPLE, computer algebra system, since 1996 in our basic mathematics courses of informatics, mechanical-, electrical- and civil engineering. After this ten-year old experience we can say that the usage of CAS is unavoidable in the engineering We introduce applications of computer algebra gradually  only for visualization during the lectures (in the firs semester)  for time-consuming numerical calculations after chalk-and talk practicing, at the end of the semester (in the second semester)  for symbolical calculations and for complicated applications - all lessons in computer laboratories (in the third semester)

CADGME Pécs, 2007 The didactical questions in relation CAS - examples The mathematics curriculum of the civil engineering requires the discussion of the concept of the Fourier-series and partial differential equations at the end of students’ third semester. Our example exemplifies how can we use the same worksheet in different ways to teach Fourier series and partial differential equations. Modularization-allows us to use the worksheets in different way. Let’s see an exampleLet’s see an example:

CADGME Pécs, 2007 The teaching method depends on -time (practical aspect: how many holidays were in the semester) -needs of professionals in details: for civil engineering students the concept and the solution, for informatics students the construction of procedures for mathematicians the step by step solution process for architects only to build procedures -interest of students (it might change to students group of the same year) Results: using white box-black box technique in teaching with help of CAS
