Solutions Types of Mixtures
2
Objectives 1.Distinguish between hetergeneous and homogeneous mixtures. 2.List different solute-solvent combinations. 3.Compare the properties of solutions, suspensions, and colloids.
3
Types of Mixtures
4
Solutions Solution – homogeneous mixture of two or more substances in a single phase; even distribution of particles Soluble – able to be dissolved.
5
Components of Solutions Solute – substance that dissolves Solvent – the dissolving medium

8
Suspensions and Colloids Suspension – mixture with large (> 1000 nm) solute particle sizes; particles settle out over time. Examples: paint, muddy water Colloid – mixture with intermediate solute particle sizes (between 1 -1000 nm); particles remain dispersed over time Examples: aerosols, foam, mayonaisse
