Specific Heat The amount of heat energy a material requires to raise its temperature is a characteristic that can be used to identify it. This is called heat capacity, Cp. It is measured in Joules per gram per degree Celsius The heat energy in an object can be written and calculated by the following equation:

“Em-cat” - m is mass in grams - Cp is specific heat of the substance is the final temperature minus the initial Temperature

Calculate heat to raise temperature How much heat is required to raise the temperature of 2.5 grams of copper from 25 to 55 o C? The specific heat of copper is 0.385 J/g o C.
