Topics we will be covering What are muscles? What are the types of muscles? What do muscles do?
3
What are Muscles? A body tissue that contracts or shortens making body parts move
4
What Are Muscles There are about 650 muscles in the human body Muscle mass makes up about half of a persons body weight Made up of muscle, tendons, nerves and blood vessels
5
What are the types of muscles? Smooth Muscle or Visceral Muscle – Involuntary muscles found within the walls of organs – Found in the esophagus, Stomach, Blood vessels, bronchi, bladder and many more areas – Weakest of all muscle – Stretches the most out of the 3 types of muscle
6
What are the types of muscles? Skeletal muscles – Voluntary muscles anchored by tendons to the bones – Used in skeletal movement and maintaining posture – 35%-45% of all body mass is skeletal muscle – Most attach to bones across joints to pull the bones together
7
What are the types of muscles? Skeletal Muscle – Usually comes in pairs to move a joint two different directions
8
What are the types of muscles? Cardiac Muscle – Involuntary muscle that is built like skeletal muscle – Only found in the heart – Does not get fatigued
9
What do muscles do? Cardiac and skeletal muscle are striated or appear in bands which is a sign that they are very strong unlike visceral muscle Tendons are tough bands of connective tissue that attach muscles to bones.
