Our Güssing …
4
Situation at the end of the 1980s
50 years alongside iron curtain no industry high rate of unemployment 70% commuters high rate of migration small structured agriculture bad traffic infrastructure
5
The Güssing Model The Goal:
…is the strategy of a decentralized local energy production with the existing renewable resources of a region! The Goal: … to get independent from fossil energy in order to strengthen the regional added value! This strategy can be adapted individually wherever resources are available. 5
6
Milestones in Güssing Since 1990:
Energy efficiency measures and beginning with production of heat out of biomass Since 2001: Production of electricity (biomass and photovoltaic) Since 2008: Beginning of important research projects (production of synth. Natural gas and production of synth. Liquid fuels). New research institute! Goal for 2011: Pilot project 2MW demonstration plant -> gasification of waste
7
The district heating system of Güssing
Since 1996: Gradual grid-development Current grid 35km Convincing arguments: No loss of comfort! Stable energy price!

Photovoltaic plant Güssing& Production of photovoltaic cells
Since 2004 Capacity: 27,9 kWp Average amount of Energy: ca. 30MWh Since 2008: 140 jobs Invest. 50 Mio€ Average efficiency of monocrystalline solar cells: 17,5% Annual output: 85MWp

Energy balance – town of Güssing
Total annual demand (2008): heat (33GWh private, 40GWh public + industries) GWh electricity (7GWh Privat, 33,4GWh Öffentl. Geb. + Gewerbe u. Industrie) 40,4 GWh fuels GWh Annual production of energy (2008): heat – 4 biomass-district heating plants ,2GWh heat – private (cockle stoves, pellets, etc) ,5 GWh electricity – 2 CHP plants ,2GWh Since 2009 Methanisation (Prod. synth. natural gas) projected 8,4GWh/a Current degree of self sufficiency regarding heat and electricity: regarding private households and public buildings % incl. industries and commercials approx %

Energy concepts – process
Development of energy concepts – process: Collection of data (surveys) Private households Public buildings Economy/businesses Analysis of data and calculations Estimation of energy demand Potential of energy savings Resources and potential of substitution CO2 – emissions Evaluation of measures Action plan
23
Energy concepts – results
Energy concept – content: Used energy sources & current energy demand Possible energy savings subdivided in following sectors: private households public sector (public buildings, street lighting, etc.) industry Available resources to cover the energy demand – ratio between available resources & current energy demand Evaluation of measures CO2 – emissions & potential savings
