Salvation & The Church Great Doctrines of the Bible
2
Doctrine of Man: Review Man has a body as well as a spirit. The body dies, eventually, but the spirit lives forever, either in heaven or hell. The concern then is what determines your destiny?
3
The BIG Difference The big difference among the world’s religions is not only an issue of Who God is, but an issue of who Man is, as well. In most views, Man is basically good, but he is capable of bad things. In the biblical view, Man is basically bad, but capable of good things. If you start with this view, you’ll probably end up finding Jesus.
4
Doctrine of Sin: Review We are all corrupted by sin and separated from God. We are not sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners. It is our nature since the Fall. It’s who we are.
5
Eternal Destiny Although our sin dooms us, beyond hope of recovery, to eternity separated from God, there is hope. There is salvation, but it is not within us to achieve.

Doctrine of Salvation Major Subdivisions Basis Result Cost Timing

The Basis of Salvation Salvation is not for us to achieve. Because of who we are, there’s nothing we can do. Salvation is a gift. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2: 8-10

The Result of Salvation By His own choice, God offers His forgiveness and provides us the ability to serve Him now and live in righteousness forever. Therefore, since we have been justified [made right] by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1

The Cost of Forgiveness Blood pays for sin. …without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Hebrews 9:22 There is a picture of this payment at the time of the first sin.
19
A Picture of Things to Come Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. Genesis 3:7 And the L ORD * God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. Genesis 3:21 *(Secret bonus lesson: the words “Lord” and “God” in all caps represent God’s proper name)
20
Christ is the Ultimate Payment For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit 1 Peter 3:18

The Timing We will follow the same pattern Christ set. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh…

The Timing We will follow the same pattern Christ set. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit 1 Peter 3:18 …Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. Revelation 1:5

Doctrine of the Church Major Subdivisions Universal Church Local Church Leadership Membership
24
The Universal Church The totality of believers from the birth of the church in Acts chapter 2 to the return of Christ. He is the head of the church, and the church is His representation on earth, doing His will until He returns.
25
The Firstborn And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. Colossians 1:1 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. Romans 8:29
26
Activity of the Universal Church And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 1. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, 2. baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 3. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
27
The Local Church A local assembly of believers organized to carry out the responsibilities of the universal church.
28
Activities of the Local Church Govern themselves Select leaders Collect money for ministry Observe baptism and the Lord’s Supper Exercise church discipline Encourage one another Evangelism Worship
29
Leadership An enterprise as large as the church with this much to do, needs leadership. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.
30
Membership The idea of membership is a New Testament concept. A “member” is a specifically designed part that plays a role for which it was designed. God gives gifts to Christians as part of their “specific design.” We are to use these gifts to benefit the church.
31
Use of Gifts As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace 1 Peter 4:10
