2 The Internet Internet (aka the Net) Usage –More than half a billion users Most common uses –World Wide Web and e-mail

3 History 1969: ARPANET –Linked scientists and academic researchers 1986: NSFnet connected to ARPANET Together the two became the Internet Until 1995 –NSFnet handled most traffic –1995: terminated its network and returned to a research network

4 The Internet Today Public, Cooperative, and Independent –World Wide Web Consortium sets standards Internet 2 –Focus is on improving current internet –Develops and tests advanced technologies Professionals able to communicate over long distances

5 Connecting Dial-up –Modem and telephone line Cable modem –Through cable television network DSL and ISDN –Copper telephone lines

20 Communication Continued Mailing List – a group of e-mail names and addresses given a single name so all can receive the message Chat Rooms –A location on the internet server that permits users to chat or conduct real-time typed conversations Instant Messaging –Real-time internet communications service that notifies you when one or more people are online

21 Netiquette Netiquette or Internet Etiquette –a code of acceptable behaviors to be followed on the Internet. Rules of Netiquette –Keep messages short –Be polite –Do not assume material is accurate or up to date –Never read someone’s private E-mail

22 What is Web Publishing? Web publishing is the development and maintenance of Web Pages. Webmaster or Web developer maintains a Web using software products Five major steps to web publishing

24 Analyze and Design a Web Site Determine specific way to meet the goals identified in planning Design layout –Text, graphics, audio, video, and virtual reality Obtain required hardware
