2 509 B.C. – overthrew the Etruscans and retook Rome, established a republic 338 B.C. – defeated all Latins living in the area 284 B.C. – defeated and controlled the Etruscans 267 B.C. – conquered the Greeks in southern Italy, controlled all of Italy at this time

3 When you achieve a victory – whether it is academics, sports, games, or some other field – do you strive for more success? This may have been the way the Romans felt once they conquered Italy.

4 I. Rome Expands - After establishing their government, they faced a powerful rival in the Mediterranean region, Carthage - Carthage is on the coast of North Africa - Great trading empire - By controlling the movement of goods, they became the largest and richest Mediterranean city

5 II. The First Punic War - Both wanted control of Sicily - Came to blows in 264 B.C. - Rome sent an army to Sicily to prevent a takeover, Carthage already there - Rome quickly built a navy - Rome crushed Carthage’s navy; they flee and pay a fine to Rome

6 III. The Second Punic War - Carthage expands its empire into southern Spain - Rome helps the people in Spain rebel - Carthage sends Hannibal to attack in 218 B.C. - Hannibal’s army needed to march from Spain into Italy - He lost many men as he marched into Italy by crossing the Alps

7 - In 202 B.C., Scipio invaded Carthage and forced Hannibal to come for protection - The Battle of Zama, Rome wins -Spain to Rome -Give up its navy -Pay a large fine -Rome now rules the Mediterranean

8 IV. More Conquests - Third Punic War, Rome burns Carthage and takes 50,000 people as slaves - 148 B.C., Rome took control of Macedonia - 146 B.C., Rome took Greece - 129 B.C., Rome began taking parts of Asia - Mediterranean = “our sea”
