4. I. Rome Expands - After establishing their government, they faced a powerful rival in the Mediterranean region, Carthage - Carthage is on the coast of North Africa - Great trading empire - By controlling the movement of goods, they became the largest and richest Mediterranean city

5. II. The First Punic War - Both wanted control of Sicily - Came to blows in 264 B.C. - Rome sent an army to Sicily to prevent a takeover, Carthage already there - Rome quickly built a navy - Rome crushed Carthage’s navy; they flee and pay a fine to Rome

6. III. The Second Punic War - Carthage expands its empire into southern Spain - Rome helps the people in Spain rebel - Carthage sends Hannibal to attack in 218 B.C. - Hannibal’s army needed to march from Spain into Italy - He lost many men as he marched into Italy by crossing the Alps

7. - In 202 B.C., Scipio invaded Carthage and forced Hannibal to come for protection - The Battle of Zama, Rome wins -Spain to Rome -Give up its navy -Pay a large fine -Rome now rules the Mediterranean

8. IV. More Conquests - Third Punic War, Rome burns Carthage and takes 50,000 people as slaves - 148 B.C., Rome took control of Macedonia - 146 B.C., Rome took Greece - 129 B.C., Rome began taking parts of Asia - Mediterranean = “our sea”
