ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Goals: Students will learn about the branches of government. How they affect each other and why they are all connected to each other. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will be able to understand the differences between each branch. Students will be able to explain powers that each branch have. Process/Skills: Students will be able to research information about the 3 branches of government. Students will be able to report on their branch of government. Values/Dispositions: Students will be able to understand why the three branches of government is important to our society.

This lesson will teach students the importance of each branch and how they can affect us. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 14.B.2 Explain what government does at local, state and national levels. National – NCSS Themes POWER, AUTHORITY, AND GOVERNANCE GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

Students will be broken into 3 groups to gain a better understanding of the one of the three branches of government. Before the class is broken up a short School House Rock youtube clip will be shown about the 3 branches of government.youtube Each group will create a poster board to explain to the class facts about their branch of government. They will then present to the class about their branch. Positive/Strengths Using the same groups as the previous assignment, students will present to the class the strengths of each branch to the class. The teacher will explain that each branch has to use a system of checks and balances in order to keep each branch from gaining too much power. The students will break off and begin to find the strengths of their branch. Posters will be available to create a poster board for the presentation. Resources: Computers, Textbook, poster boards.

Negatives/Weaknesses

Students will continue to use their same groups they were put in previously. The students will have an activity that shows how a bill will be passed to be a law. The students will come up with a law that they want passed but they have to all approve it themselves. They will see the troubles that one has to go through to get a law passed. The students will also see that there are many checks and balances to go through. This activity will help the students understand how each branch would work when trying to pass a bill. Resources: Research from previous activities. Paper and Pencils to jot notes Negatives/Weaknesses

Creative Students will write a short paragraph about how they felt when doing the activity previously. They will show their knowledge by explaining the hardships when trying to pass a bill that they want to have passed. They will then watch a short youtube clip about the 3 branches of government while the teacher sings along. Once the video has been played the whole class can sing together.youtube This video will give the students a better understanding that each branch have their own power but they need checks and balances to stay equal. Students will write a short paragraph about what they had learned about the 3 branches of government. They will all create a short ad about how each branch goes together with each other. They will be able to video tape their ads and the class will watch them once they have been completed. This activity will sum up the whole lesson and allow the students to showcase their knowledge. Resources: Paper, pencil, video camera, computers, textbook.

The teacher will take note of groups that worked well and did not work well. Along with that students will have the opportunity to evaluate their group members as well.
