ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Goals: Students will be able to understand the Transatlantic slave trade and the reason why it occurred. Students will be able to describe the cultural exchange that took place during the slave trade. Students will be able to understand and express the moral implications of the slave trade by creating a journal from the perspective of those involved. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will know the history of the slave trade, and the cultures and people involved. Process/Skills: Students will be able to understand the slave trade by looking at numbers and graphs, and also by reading and listening to stories from the trade. Values/Dispositions: Students will understand the moral implications of the slave trade, and the lesson that it can offer them in their own lives.

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Rationale: This lesson will help students understand the background of the slave trade and the moral lessons that it offers. It is a difficult subject, but through this lesson they will learn about the individual experience of the slaves and the European reasoning behind the slave trade. At the end of the lesson, students will understand the role that culture played in creating slave trade and also in ending it. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards C. Understand how social systems form and develop over time. 18.C.4a Analyze major cultural exchanges of the past (e.g., Colombian exchange, the Silk Road, the Crusades). Students will learn the basic information behind the African Slave Trade and its background. They will be given maps, graphs, and numbers to help them understand the growth and eventually decline of the trade. Objective

Students will listen to stories from slaves involved in the trade. They will be given time to write their feelings on the story in their journal. They will also write about why this occurred, and how they would have reacted if they had lived during this time. Intuitive

Positive/Strengths Students will listen to music that came about during the slave trade, and they will also learn about other types of cultural exchanges that took place during this time. They will view images from African and slave culture during this time as well.

As a group, students will create a list of reasons on why the practice of slavery is wrong. They will counter the arguments of the slave traders of the time by using the knowledge that they have learned. Negatives/Weaknesses

Creative Students will create a journal from the perspective of a slave and a European from the beginning of the trade and when the trade was abolished. They will also write about their own feelings about what they have learned. This activity will help students express their knowledge on why the slave trade existed and how it influenced the slaves and the Europeans.

Thinking About Thinking

Students will conclude their journal by writing about the practice of slavery and the moral implication involved with it. They will think about what they have learned about slavery, and they will discuss the implications that it has had on the United States and the world.

Students will be assessed based on their participation in the group activity and through their journal. This will show how well they understand the topic, and also how well they understand the cultural significance of the event.
