WEBINAR Cities’ experience with biofuels 14/01/2013 14.00-15.30 Speaker, Organisation

Slide title Background & Objectives Public transport in Aalborg is operated by approximately 100 diesel buses. Operation The buses are operated by private companies winning a tender for operation every 6-8 years The tenders are released by the Regional Public Transport Authority (owned by the municipalities) The aim was to make buses run on at least 10 % bio diesel during the ARCHIMEDES project 50 postal vehicles were included in the project A study to determine the possibility to use a 2 nd generation bio diesel product should be carried out CIVITAS Webinar 14/02/2013

Slide title Challenges Bio diesel can be quite challenging. A few of the questions we needed to address were the following: Tendering process How to fix the extra costs How to fix the responsibility Other properties than standard diesel Fat and cool Blending with oil Warranties of the engines Fuelling facilities - mixing the right blend Two strategies demonstrated CIVITAS Webinar 14/02/2013

Slide title Implementation The implementation of this project consisted of the public transport tender, selecting the bio diesel product and setting up fuelling facilities for bio diesel. Tender The tender for bus operation was carried out in 2009 and 2010 defining the requirements for bio diesel operation. The extra costs to operate on bio diesel was covered by the project. The Blend A 10 % blend of bio diesel made from slaughter house waste (2 nd gen.) was chosen for the buses. Also 20 % was tested. Fuelling facilities Three fuelling stations were established as part of the project CIVITAS Webinar 14/02/2013

Slide title Results The evaluation is divided in two: Emissions Laboratory tests and on road tests have been carried out to test whether the emissions would increase due to the new fuel. No significant change in emissions compared to standard diesel (in the same vehicles) has been detected Carbon emissions The fuel consumption of the involved vehicles has been monitored. Around 1,000 tonnes of CO 2 saved. CIVITAS Webinar 14/02/2013

Slide title Conclusion Challenges overcome It is possible to operate buses and delivery vehicles on 2 nd generation bio diesel of up to 20 % with out problems. Saving fossil fuels It is possible to save fossil fuels and thereby reducing the Carbon emissions by 1,000 tonnes during over two years without significantly changing the level of other emissions. Giving extra costs The bio diesel product is more expensive than standard diesel – and the PT authority and the postal service need to decide whether this is something they want to invest in.
