Dimensional Metrology Dimensional Metrology Program (DMP) The DMP involves the: Large Scale Coordinate Metrology group Engineering Metrology group Surface Metrology group: surface roughness & bullets The program addresses dimensional measurements and standards over six orders of magnitude: micrometers to kilometers

Dimensional Metrology DMP R&D Portfolio: Laser Tracker Calibration Facility Objective: Develop new metrological facilities for Laser trackers per ASME B89.4.19 Major Results (Completed 2009): 1D cooperative target test range now in service with U(L) = 2 m + 3 × 10 -7 L Volumetric performance facility now in service with U(3D) = 3 m

Dimensional Metrology DMP R&D Portfolio: Contact Profilometer Development Objective: Replace the obsolete Talysurf with a new instrument having a factor of ten better vertical resolution, improving surface characterization measurements Major Results (Completed 2009): New instrument (Talysurf 120L) acquired, characterized, and now providing ongoing calibrations.

Dimensional Metrology Harmonize National & International CMM Standards Objective: Harmonize the US with the ISO for CMMs to reduce costs to US industry Results: (Completed 2009) After 15 years, the ISO 10360 series and the B89.4.10360 series are now harmonized B89.4.10360.2, lead by the DMP, is now in print (2008) ISO 10360-2 major revision, lead by the DMP, is now in print (2009) MEL staff receive DOC Gold Medal

Dimensional Metrology DMP R&D Portfolio: DOD Body Armor Measurement Analysis Objective: Address urgent DOD need to restart next phase of body armor production delayed due to problems with dimensional metrology Major Results (Completed 2010): Detailed report based on extensive testing and analysis of DOD testing procedure issued on February 17, 2010.

Dimensional Metrology DMP R&D Portfolio: Surface Roughness & Standard Bullets and Casing Objective: Revise US ASME B46 standard & Create a traceability system for optical inspection devices of bullets and casings in crime laboratories according to recently developed guidelines of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors. Major Results (ongoing): New revision in final draft form and is expected in print in 2010 Two crime lab workshops held on bullet testing Standard bullets and casings distributed for round robin testing

Dimensional Metrology DMP R&D Portfolio: Fundamental Length Metrology Objective: Develop ultra high accuracy realization of the meter and refractometry for the highest level of length metrology.. Major Results (ongoing): Optical comb establishes traceability to the SI meter with a factor of ten reduction in the uncertainty over the iodine stabilized laser (2009) Refractive index: improved optical cavities installed with precise environmental control and lasers locked to track refractive index (Pound Drever Hall). GPS Comb NIST Calibrations

Dimensional Metrology DMP R&D Portfolio: Microfeature CMM Probe Objective: Provide new measurement capabilities to industry in the micro- regime: develop and fully characterize new M48 CMM and probes and techniques for measurement of microfeatures. Major Results (ongoing): New measurement strategies provide best-in-world capabilities for challenging measurement tasks such as micro-pivot, reverse-taper microholes (fuel injectors) and knife-edge apertures Factor of 2 improvement in UMAP CMM accuracy New microfeature probes acquired Second M48 assembled and under mapping

Dimensional Metrology DMP R&D Portfolio: Long & Short Range Laser Scanners Objective: Develop noncontact laser scanning standards, artifacts, and calibration facilities to support the US industry which is now at the vanguard of this enabling technology Major Results: 1D Noncooperative target test range in preliminary testing New work items added to ASTM E57 & ISO TC213 WG10 committees Instrument to calibrate 1D artifacts completed
