What makes a difference? Reading O Reading a little each day - to your child, your child reading to you, enjoy reading! O Read things they enjoy – magazines, sports pages, newspapers O Reading in your environment – TV listings, signposts, shop signs, number plates O Flash cards / matching games to help learn key words and letter sounds O Model reading

Writing O Writing their name O Purposeful writing – shopping lists, invitations, letters, notes O Stationery - Coloured paper, envelopes, post it notes, pens, biros… O Writing needs to be fun O Model writing

Speaking and Listening O Speak lots to your child O Speak and read in your first language O Listen and model correct language O Nursery rhymes, songs, tongue twisters, poems O Games – I spy, rhyming games, blending games

Multiplication and division O Learning your tables O Knowing the facts O Family of facts ~ if I know 4 x 5 = 20 then I know 5 x 4 = 20, also 20 divided by 4 = 5 and 20 divided by 5 = 4 O Knowing the related multiplication and division facts O Knowing the middle of the times tables really well, these are the tricky ones 5x 6x 7x 8x a number children find tricky O You tube has many great ways to learn your tables O Finding rhymes I ate and I ate till I was sick on the floor 8 x 8 = 64 etc O Finding a pattern O Finding what works for your child O Finding time

General O Being active helps children stay focused in class going to the park, ball-games, swings O Talking O Nursery rhymes / songs O Using your first language O Sleep helps children's attention in class – going to bed at 7pm O Limiting computer games, ipad, television O No screens before bed O Being read to, hearing stories, talking about books O Going to the library O Playing games – board games, I-spy, guess what I am?
