STANDARD 2.8 (9%-14%) Evaluate human behaviors in terms of how likely they are to ensure the ability to live sustainably on Earth.

2.8.1 Evaluate alternative energy technologies for use in North Carolina.

WHAT ARE ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES? Solar, wind, biofuels, nuclear fusion, fuel cells, wave power, geothermal

WHAT ARE SOME VIABLE ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES FOR NC? Wave power, wind power, nuclear fusion

IN WHICH PART OF NC WOULD HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY BE POSSIBLE? On the ocean

IN WHICH PART OF NC WOULD WIND- GENERATED ENERGY BE POSSIBLE? Plateaus

2.8.2 Critique conventional and sustainable agriculture and aquaculture practices in terms of their environmental impacts

WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF TRADITIONAL AGRICULTURE TECHNIQUES? Traditional farming. Cultivation of land to grow plants and breed livestock.

WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE TECHNIQUES? an integrated system of plant and animal production practices having a site-specific application that will last over the long term

WHAT ARE THE ECONOMIC CONCERNS OF SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE TECHNIQUES? It would be hard to get the supplies you need on a large scale like we do now.

WHAT ARE THE ECONOMIC CONCERNS OF TRADITIONAL AGRICULTURE TECHNIQUES? We are using too many natural resources and we are using too much land. There is also a huge amount of pollution in a traditional agriculture environment.

WHAT IS TOPSOIL? The layer of soil that is on top of the lithosphere, usually 2in thick

WHAT IS ARABLE LAND? Land that can be used to grow crops.

WHAT IS AQUACULTURE? The rearing of aquatic animals and cultivation of aquatic plants for food.

2.8.3 Explain the effects of uncontrolled population growth on the Earth’s resources

WHAT IS CARRYING CAPACITY OF AN ENVIRONMENT? The number or quantity of people or things that can survive over a long period of time in an environment. Depends on limiting factors.

WHAT FACTORS CAN LIMIT THE GROWTH OF HUMAN POPULATION? Natural resources, water, land, food

WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL RESISTANCE? How the environmental limiting factors reduce the population growth rates and set a maximum of a population size.

HOW DOES GROWING HUMAN POPULATION IMPACT THE NATURAL RESOURCES OF NORTH CAROLINA? One of the largest natural resources is wood, timber, which we over forest and also we are cutting down for more space for homes and companies.

2.8.4 Evaluate the concept of “reduce, reuse, recycle” in terms of impact on natural resources.

WHAT IS AN ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT? Impact expressed as the land and natural resources used to sustain the life. This can be at a personal level or a large scale.

HOW DO YOUR PERSONAL CHOICES IMPACT THE AVAILABILITY OF NATURAL RESOURCES? Choosing a car, choosing a home, water consumption, what you choose to use or recycle on a daily basis

HOW DO YOUR PERSONAL CHOICES IMPACT THE QUALITY OF THE ENVIRONMENT? Supplies that you use, and over use, and how you recycle. Name some ways.

HOW CAN THE STREAM OF SOLID WASTE GOING TO THE LANDFILL BE REDUCED? Reduce, reuse, recycle, rebuy Composting The average person throws out 4.5lbs of trash a day
