1 UKOLN is supported by: ePrints UK Workshops and Business Models Philip Hunter ePrints UK Project Manager p.j.hunter@ukoln.ac.uk A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk

2 ePrints UK Workshops ePrints UK is a service provider which harvests from various data providers The viability of the service depends upon there being sufficient data providers in existence with sufficient records to supply the national database. Therefore ePrints UK needs to encourage institutions to set up eprint archives, and for authors to submit their papers to them. To do this ePrints UK needs to encourage awareness of the potential of institutional repositories and discussion of the barriers to participation Is the same true for ePrints.org software? ePrints.org participated in all of the workshops

3 ePrints UK Workshops: the Issues Introducing a potential user audience to the basic concepts Promoting the advantages in take-up of the technology (whats in it for institutions and for libraries?)(whats in it for the researcher?) The technology involved Discussion of implementation & experiences Other issues which are important to the user (IPR, author copyright, preservation) The Funding background

4 ePrints UK & ePrints.org: similar requirements? The software needs its potential user audience to understand the basic concepts of ePrints and the OAI PMH ePrints.org needs advocates to promote the take-up of the technology (what can the technology do for institutions and for libraries?) The user base needs to be able to make an informed decision between software options They need to know about ePrints.orgs existence as a choice Need fora for discussion? How does the software handle the issues which are important to the user (IPR, author copyright, preservation), if not actually part of the ePrints concept? The Funding options
