Chapter 17: Reflection & Mirrors Honors Physics Bloom High School Mr. Barry Latham
2
17.1: Reflection from Plane Mirrors The Law of Reflection ◦ The angle that a reflected ray makes as measured from the normal to a reflective surface equals the angle the incident ray makes as measured from the same normal. ◦i=r◦i=r
3
More Reflection Events Specular Reflection- reflection from a smooth (mirrored) surface Diffuse Reflection- reflection from a smooth (rough) surface Law of Reflection applies to both reflection events!
4
Objects and Plane-Mirror Images Plane mirror (not plain mirror) ◦ Smooth, flat surface ◦ Specular reflection Object- source of light rays to be reflected ◦ May be a luminous source or illuminated source Image- formed by the combination of reflected rays Virtual image- appears on the opposite side of the mirror as the Object
5
Labeling Diagrams d o - distance from virtual object to mirror d i - distance from image to mirror ◦ d i =-d o for a plane mirror Mirror surface is origin h o - height of object h i - height of image h i =h o for a plane mirror See Figure 17-6
6
Orientation For a plane mirror, the top- bottom orientation is the same for the object and image ◦ The bee’s head is at the top of his body for the object and the image For a plane mirror, the left- right orientation is opposite for the object and image ◦ The bee’s left wing (object) is on the right side for the image
