1 TASK C2.2 –READ AND SUMMARISE INFORMATION

2 Objectives: By the end of this session, students will be able to: To use processes involved in summarising text. Work with text and produce a short summary.

3 Aims:- Task C2.2 assessment criteria Read and summarise information from at least TWO documents about the same subject. Each document must be a minimum of 500 words long.

4 EVIDENCE REQUIRED 2.2.1 select and read relevant documents 2.2.2 identify accurately the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning 2.2.3 summarise the information to suit your purpose

5 C2.2.1 Select and read relevant documents Task Two has asked that you look for information on ……….. You need to select TWO suitable documents from which you can identify the meaning Hi-light the key words in the selected documents

6 C2.2.2 – Identify accurately and compare main points, ideas and lines of reasoning Identify accurately:- ensure research is relevant to the subject Main points. Ideas, lines of reasoning:- your interpretation (understanding) of the research you have selected

7 C2.2.3 – Summarise the information to suit your purpose With your selected research documents YOU MUST Hi-light the main points – picking out key words. Make any notes in the margin to show your understanding of the text. Write in your own words.

8 Method Recap A useful method to use when summarising is identifying the key points first. Use a highlighter pen to make the text stand out, or underline the key words/sentences. Draw up a list of key words/sentences.

9 MAIN POINTS To find the relevant information from material you are reading it is a good idea to highlight or underline the main points that carry the information. Pick out the main points in the following example:

10 EXAMPLE: Write Jane a note and tell her tomorrow’s meeting is cancelled but we’ll still need her report by 10am. Now pick out the key words

12 ACTIVITY TWO – pick out the key words The daily newspapers are engaged in a bitter sales battle. Some newspapers reduce their prices to try to sell more papers. Others give special offers on travel if you collect a set of tokens day by day. One even sometimes gives away free plants if you send away the tokens in the newspaper.

15 Activity Three: It used to be setting the video recorder that baffled parents but came as second nature to their offspring; today it's downloading music from the internet. But charities and record labels around the world yesterday launched a campaign to make it clear to parents that their ignorance would be no defence in court if their children were found sharing illegal files.
