ACM and SIG Memberships

In 2004 35% of ACM Professional Members had memberships in one or more SIGs Down to 30% in 2008

Task Force Mission Consider the context Formation of chapters (SIGCHI, SIGGRAPH, India, China) SIGs and SIG-related activities generate valuable DL content Computing as a discipline is changing Given this, what is the role of SIGs? What is the value of SIG membership in this environment? Is there really a problem?

What do SIGs do? Conferences Newsletters or other community-building activities Local chapters / affinity groups Outreach / education / advocacy Is membership important for these activities? Umbrella organizations for activities?

Discussion Increase visibility of SIG activities SIG activities write-up in Communications? CHI communities -Local SIGS and interest areas SIGDA has technical interest areas SIGGRAPH Lite Web – based chapters? Mailing lists, website, SIG representation?

Is there really a problem? Consider the reach of the SIGs Chapters DL Conferences Impact of ACM Curriculum Impact of Policy Some things we can do

Recommendations #1 Better measure the reach of the SIGs (ACM) Formal members (consider multi-year members) Chapter members Conference attendees (multiple years) Mailing list subscribers Content downloaders from DL (through institution subscriptions)

Recommendations # 2 New conferences / SIGS Growth areas outside computing with no ACM SIGs green computing developing world Need a plan for considering growth areas

Recommendations #3 Viability reports – Measure SIGs against their own goals (task force members) Current system based on membership, not considering umbrella or goals Shift to measuring against SIG goals, begin 2010 Conferences Local chapters, Membership Advocacy Benefits What does SIG do to address community needs?
