2 MDG Monitoring. Role of UN Global level –Annual report by the Secretary- General to the General Assembly Country level –MDG reports from the government with support from UN Country Team.

3 Purpose of MDG Reports A tool for awareness raising advocacy, building of alliances, renew political commitment Help focus national development debate on specific priorities

4 MDG country report ü Process : Government reporting to citizens ü Product : concise, jargon-free, local language(s), descriptive, disaggregated ü Objective : Tool for advocacy & campaigning Identify policy and data gaps

5 MDG country report By-product ü Should be a summary version of the CCA, the comprehensive medium-term strategy for improving living standards, UNDAF and the MDG analytical paper

6 MDG analytical paper: objectives Tailor MDG targets and indicators to context of Uzbekistan Establish a baseline for monitoring progress, identify data gaps and status of achievement Policy options to achieve targets Identify challenges for achieving the MDGs Mechanisms to monitor progress

7 MDG analytical paper: structure For each Goal: Short background to introduce the goal Target(s) proposed under each goal Identify indicators for each target, data sources and establish trends (baseline year?) Brief assessment of data quality, opportunities for disaggregation (gender, region, rural/urban, ethnicity, etc/) Policy response and options Main challenges for achievement of MDGs

8 MDG analytical paper: format Audience are mainly policy makers, international organizations and donors: Should not be lengthy and highly technical Clear sharp messages that help identify priorities Effective use of graphs to help visualize trends and challenges Sharp recommendations for improving: policy environment, data gaps, development opportunities A table to present the status of statistics at a glance will help coordinate resources for improvement of data sources available

9 MDG analytical paper: follow up The MDG analytical paper will be the main input to the preparation of the MDG country report in 2004 It is also an opportunity to improve coordination of national and international resources for achieving the MDGs (for policy support and statistical capacity)
