2 Sentence Fragments A sentence fragment is a word group that has been capitalized as if it were a complete sentence. Ex. : Ran to the store.

3 Decide… sentence or fragment? A flying squirrel a squirrel that can gracefully glide through the air. The squirrel glides downward, then straight, and finally upward. Nesting in the hollows of trees.

4 Run-on sentences Sentences that keep going and going and going…like the Energizer Bunny. Is actually two complete sentences punctuated like one sentence. Two separate thoughts run together. Ex. The Braves lost their game last night they haven’t won a game in weeks.

5 Sentence or run-on? I went to the Kenny Chesney concert last night it was great! I saw the movie, The World Trade Center ; it made me cry. I went to the grocery store for some bread then I went to the mall to shop.

6 Revising run-on sentences 1. You can make two sentences “I went to the Kenny Chesney concert. It was great!”

7 You can use a comma and a coordinating conjunction such as and, but, or or. –“I went to the Kenny Chesney concert, and it was great!!

8 Combining Sentences Sentence combining helps to reduce the number of repeated words or ideas and makes sentences less choppy.

9 How do we combine sentences? By inserting words. By inserting phrases. Using and, but, or or

10 Inserting Words… I went to Nickelback concert. It was great! I went to a great Nickelback concert!!!

11 Inserting phrases… I love the movies. I love to eat popcorn. I love to eat popcorn at the movies.

12 Using and, but, or or… I love the movies. I love to eat popcorn. –I love to got to the movies and eat popcorn.

13 Using and, but, or or I can got to the football game. I can go to my friend’s birthday party. –I can go to the football game or my friend’s birthday party.
