Early Signs of Pregnancy Missed Period Fullness or mild ache in abdomen Tired, drowsy or faint Need to urinate more often Tenderness or Discomfort in breasts Nausea

Medical Care During Pregnancy See a doctor at first suspicion Find an Obstetrician Go to every doctor’s appointment OB’s charge on lump sum which covers all prenatal exams, a normal birth, and a checkup after the birth

The First Exam Checks blood pressure, pulse, respiration and initial weight Asks about and records medical history Checks urine for infections Takes a blood test for anemia and for Rh factor Determines Due Date

Discomforts of Pregnancy Nausea Sleepiness –due to hormonal changes Heartburn Shortness of breath Varicose (swollen) veins Muscle cramps in the legs Lower back pain

Vaginal Bleeding Unusual weight gain or loss Excessive Thirst Reduced or painful urination Severe abdominal pain Persistent headaches Severe vomiting Fever Swelling of the face, hands or ankles Blurred vision or dizziness Prolonged backache Increased vaginal mucus Possible Complications

Weight Gain During Pregnancy Months 1 -3: 1 pound/month Months 4-9: 3-4 pounds/month Total weight gain: 24 – 30 pounds month. By 9 th month, should be some where between this weight amount. Weight is monitored at every visit

Personal Care Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and all drugs Get plenty of rest Moderate exercise such as walking Good Hygiene & Healthful Diet Reduce Stress Avoid sugary foods and caffeine Take a time-out Practice relaxation techniques Take a class for expectant parents
