4 Typhoid Fever Cause Contamination from human waste Caused by different types of Salmonella Symptoms High fever, weakness, headache, stomach pains, and a rash of flat and red-colored spots

5 Typhoid Fever Prevention When there was a break out of Typhoid Fever people stayed home. They could not stop the disease because during colonial times they did not have sewage disposal. They also had open markets and dirty wells that spread the disease. Treatment Typhoid fever was left untreated and people would be sick for three weeks to a month and they would get sick over and over again.

6 Malaria Cause A parasite is introduced into a person by a mosquito bite. Symptoms High grade fever, shaking chills, severe head aches and body aches, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, chest pain, stomach pain, convulsions, coma, or hallucinations

7 Malaria Prevention People who lived near the swamps and water could not prevent themselves from the chance of getting Malaria. Treatment There was no cure for malaria and victims were sometimes treated with herbal medicines such as betony, mustard, St. John's Wort, wormwood and foxglove. People who have had Malaria can get it again several more times in their lives.

8 Small Pox Cause Smallpox was highly infectious and people transferred it from person to person by direct contact Symptoms Fever, headache, muscle ache, backache, nausea, vomiting, skin sores, blindness, bacterial skin infections and fatal pneumonia

9 Small Pox Prevention To stop Small Pox, people stayed away from infected people. Treatment Some doctors believed in inoculation. People would cut themselves on both arms and expose themselves to the virus on purpose. They would be sick for almost 2 months.

10 Diphtheria Cause Caused by a bacteria that makes toxins that circulate through the blood and damage the heart. Symptoms Sore throat, swollen tonsils, fever, difficulty breathing, dry cough, coma, face swelling, and then death from suffocating

11 Diphteria Prevention To stop Diphteria, people stayed away from infected people Treatment This disease was fatal for children during colonial times.

12 Scarlet Fever Cause This disease is caused by strep bacteria Is highly infectious and people transferred it from person to person by direct contact Symptoms Sore throat, or strep throat, fever, vomiting, rash on the neck and chest, peeling on the fingertips and toes, chills, headache, stomach pain and muscle aches.

13 Scarlet Fever Prevention To stop Scarlet Fever, people stayed away from infected people Treatment Some treatments used emetics, calomel, purges, gargles, and certain drinks

14 Measles Cause Measles is caused by a virus mostly in the lungs. This disease is highly contagious and can be spread by the mucus of a sick person when they sneeze, cough or talk to you. Symptoms Runny nose, cough, fever, red eyes, rash on entire body, white spots on gums and cheeks

15 Measles Prevention To stop Measles, people stayed away from infected people Treatment They used treatments with bloodletting, vomiting, diluting drinks, blisters, and drugs (opiates).

16 Summary Living in Colonial America was very hard People did not always have good food to eat to stay healthy. They did not have fresh fruits or vegetables for vitamins that we need to be healthy. Thank you for visiting my cafe!
