1 CONFIDENCE Through CONFLICT RESOLUTION With Amanda Lardner And Special Guest David Porter

2 1.Why are you (or why are you still) a referee? 2.What situations make you nervous or upset during a game?

3 Where does confidence matter? in the beginning of the game every blow of your whistle how you act between halves/after the game any dealings with any agents of the game

4 Always Remember understand that you have the auth, to eject coaches and to direct parents to leave you can abandon the match You can introduce yourself to coaches before the game stick to your guns – what you decide is the final decision

5 Make the right call If its a card, its a card! Follow through on threats/promises Knowing the laws of the game is your best tool

6 Theory – Conflict Resolution Identify the conflictual situation Understand other persons point of view -are they saying whats really upsetting them or are they masking it with something else

7 If needed (and if possible) stop for a second… think clearly before acting Make a decision for your next action (could be to ignore) Ask questions – why are you angry? what result is he/she looking for? Etc.

8 Continued Find balance/common ground -to create a peaceful environment (this doesnt mean that everyone will be happy) Know which soccer law helps you the most

9 Continued Act! -Calm, rational, logical If successful, go on with your life! If not, start over (knowing what didnt work)

10 Youve now dealt with a conflict!

11 When is this useful? Dealing with Referees Dealing with Coaches Dealing with Players Time to role play!

12 Coach Offside… Coach feels like calls are one-sided. Coach feels like calling the game for you from the sideline. Coach wont follow substitution instructions

13 More Coach Starting a game late or cutting half times down Constructive criticism

14 Players Yellow/red/2 nd yellow cards Player feels he was fouled, and you disagree. Player feels he is being picked on. Players have heated moments. The back-talk.
