4   Focus Question: How did Congress pass pieces of legislation in an attempt to address important social and economic issues?  Read Dred Scott v. Sanford (1857)  Read Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)  Read Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954)  Read Roe v. Wade (1973)  For your reading:  Summarize the events leading up to the passage of the legislation.  Explain the impact of this piece of legislation on American society.  Extension Activity  Complete additional readings besides the one assigned to your group.  Share Out Activity 1: Supreme Court Cases Jigsaw

6   1. Dred Scott v. Sanford (1857)  a. Establishes that runaway slaves who reside in a free state are still slaves  a. The gov. cannot take away someone’s property.  2. Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)  a. Establishes that segregation is constitutional as long as the segregated facilities are “Separate but Equal”.  3. Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954)  a. Establishes that segregation is unconstitutional because segregated facilities are “Inherently unequal”.  a. Schools are forced to integrate as a result.  4. Roe v. Wade (1973)  a.
