5. Who can apply through QTAC?
You can apply through QTAC for tertiary courses if you are:
An Australian or international student completing Year 12 in Australia
Achieving an OP or a QTAC Selection Rank (if you are OP ineligible)
Completing an IB Diploma or partially completing an IB Diploma (at least five subjects at either Higher Level or Standard Level)

6. Courses available through QTAC
The following types of courses may be offered through QTAC:

Diplomas
Advanced Diplomas
Degrees and Associate Degrees
Some post-registration, graduate entry and post graduate courses (not available to Year 12 students)

13. Choosing your preferences
From 1 August 2013 QTAC applications open for courses that commence in September 2013 through to July 2014.
Year 12s may select courses that commence Semester and Semester
(NB: Year 12s cannot select courses that commence Semester 3, 2013.)

You can choose up to six course preferences for each offer round.
Make sure you satisfy the Minimum Entry Requirements for each
course preference.
Include a range of courses with varying levels of competitiveness ie cut-offs.
Cut-offs may change from year to year, from semester to semester and from offer round to offer round.
Use previous cut-offs as a guide only.
After lodging your application, you can change your preferences. (First 3 changes of preference - free; fourth and subsequent changes of preference - $34 each.)

In any offer round, you can only receive one offer and this would be your highest eligible preference.

Courses you really want, even if your chance of gaining entry is not assured.
Less competitive courses that provide another way to your chosen career or to a second choice career. They can be used to upgrade to your ‘ideal’ course.
Courses you are prepared to do if you miss out on all others. They should be courses that in the past have been easy to get into. They can help you upgrade.

You do not need to change this order for any top up offer rounds in February and March (unless you have courses with different Major Offer Rounds such as Bond Uni with a Major Offer Round in March).

Finally, year round admissions means…
If you do not receive an offer in your preferred course in January, February or March 2014, you have more options.
You can keep your QTAC application active after the Semester 1 offer rounds through to July 2014.
You can conditionally accept an offer in January or February (and even begin that course), change your preferences to include Semester 2 courses and be considered for your new higher preferences in the June Major Offer Round.

Applying for Semester 2 Start Courses
If you make a firm response in Semester 1, and then change your mind, you do not submit a new application.
Instead, just login to your application using your application number and PIN and change your preferences to include Semester 2 courses.
Your new Semester 2 courses must be listed above your previously offered course(s).

To give yourself the maximum opportunity to get the offer you want make use of all six preferences for Semester 1 courses, then change your preferences after Semester 1 offer rounds if you wish to be considered for Semester 2 courses.

What if I need a break?
You can select courses commencing Semester only if you wish.
Alternatively you could apply for a course commencing Semester and then, if allowed, request deferment.
Be aware that most courses are harder to get into in Semester 2.

Course fees vary significantly. You should therefore consider the course fee type when choosing your preferences.

Public universities - Commonwealth supported places (CSP)
Commonwealth supported places (CSP) are offered at public institutions to:
Australian citizens
New Zealand citizens
Holders of a permanent visa
The Australian Government contributes towards course costs for Commonwealth supported students. Students also pay a ‘student contribution’. This student contribution may be borrowed from the Commonwealth government under the HECS-HELP Scheme.
Please note since 1 January 2013, a person is not eligible for Commonwealth support or a HELP loan if a higher education provider reasonably expects the person will not undertake any of their courses in Australia.

TAFE Queensland and Southbank Institute of Technology:
Students are required to contribute to the cost of their program in all offerings
Partially government funded (PGF) - the program is a partially government subsidised program and upfront student contributions will apply or
Fee-based (fee) – FEE-HELP or VET FEE-HELP may be available for the program

Qld Year 12 students without an OP who are QTAC applicants can find out their OP ineligible Rank via QTAC’s Current Applicant online service
Explain the steps in the application and offer process. Note that this timeline applies to current Year 12 students. Not all steps in the timeline apply to other applicants.
Explain that Year 12s will not be given an extra week to submit ‘on time’ applications this year.
Note the period between receiving the SEP and the last date to change preferences – not long, a lot happening (Christmas, etc), so students should do most of their planning before they leave school. However, knowing that they can review their application after the release of the SEP does take some of the pressure off students.

40. QTAC, LUI, IB, & Interstate Student Numbers
To start your QTAC application:
If you are studying Year 12 in Queensland enter your LUI (Learner Unique Identifier).
If you are completing the International Baccalaureate (IB) select the relevant option and enter your IB number.
If you are completing an Australian Year 12 qualification and some IB subjects select the option which relates to your main qualification.
If you are studying Year 12 interstate select the state and enter your Year 12 number.
Then enter your QTAC PIN.

41. QTAC, LUI, IB, & Interstate Student Numbers (cont.)
Your QTAC Application Number will be printed on your Prepayment Voucher or given to you within your QTAC online application if you pay by credit card or BPAY®.
Once you have lodged your application you will be able to access Current Applicant online services using either your Queensland LUI / your IB Number / your Interstate Year 12 Number, or your QTAC Application Number.

You may wish to change your QTAC PIN (initially it is set to the day and month of your birth eg 0405 if your birthday is the fourth of May).
Changing your QSA, IB or Interstate Student PIN does not change your QTAC PIN and vice versa

Current Year 12 students apply using the online Twelve to Tertiary application service at the QTAC website
View the Training Movie and complete a Demonstration application when these services are available on the QTAC website (late July).

There are 3 ways to pay for your QTAC application:
Use a credit card when you apply online
BPAY your application fee when you apply online
Use a Prepayment Voucher (your school or institution may arrange)
Please note that if payment is made by BPAY, your application will not be processed until full payment has been received at QTAC.

45. How do I apply? (cont.)
Before your application is lodged, you can view a summary of your application.
If you are satisfied your application and qualification details are correct, you can then lodge your application.
Your application is not lodged until you see the Confirmation of Lodgement page.
Be sure to print your Confirmation of Lodgement as it is proof of lodgement and has your QTAC Application Number on it.
Please note that you will not be eligible for an offer if any QTAC fees are outstanding.

Authorise another person to act on your behalf in regard to your application
Find QTAC correspondence
Pay QTAC fees

Find out if you meet the minimum entry requirements for each course preference
Track the assessment of your qualifications and monitor supporting documentation requirements
View and print cover sheets for documentation that you need to provide to QTAC (if any)
Find out if you have received an offer and respond to the offer. For some institutions, a link will be provided to the institution’s website to enable you to enrol online; other institutions will post or enrolment information.
View your OP ineligible rank from 30 December (Qld school-leavers who are not QTAC applicants can phone QTAC to find out their OP ineligible rank).

48. Responding to a tertiary offer
If you receive an offer you must respond to QTAC by the date specified.
If you do not respond to an offer by the lapse date you may lose your right to that offer and you will not be considered for any other courses.
Applicants can respond to an offer via Current Applicant online services.
