Important Definitions 1.Nicotine – an addictive drug found in tobacco 2.Tar - a thick, dark liquid that forms when tobacco burns 3.Carbon monoxide – a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas produced when tobacco burns 4.Methanol - a poisonous liquid alcohol, known to cause blindness 5.Cyanide – a deadly poison 6.Formaldehyde – acidic gas used in a lab, disinfects and preserves

Do now Although you breathe all the time, you probably don’t think about it very often. Describe the activities or conditions that make you aware of your breathing.

Respiratory System A set of organs that supply your body with oxygen and rid your body of carbon dioxide.

Parts of the Respiratory System 1.Nose/mouth – cilia trap dirt in nose 2.Epiglottis – flap that covers trachea to prevent food inside 3.Trachea (windpipe) – air from throat to lungs 4.Lungs – exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide 5.Bronchi – tube that branches from trachea to lungs 6.Diaphragm – muscle below lungs that expands/relaxes = breath

Breathing Process 1.Diaphragm expands > air enters the body through nose/mouth > epiglottis > trachea > bronchi 2.Bronchi divide > bronchioles > alveoli surrounded by capillaries > oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange = blood 3.Diaphragm relaxes > air leaves the body that contains carbon dioxide from the lungs
