The world population is increasing exponentially and is set to continue to do so.

3 What wrong with it? 1. We are going to run out of energy Most of the energy used today comes from the finite sources of fossil fuels ( 78%) and nuclear fuels (4%). All of these will run out eventually. Only 18% comes from alternative forms of energy.

4 2. Burning fossil fuels is contributing to global warming Burning fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide. The greenhouse effect (which leads to global warming) is caused by a number of gases including carbon dioxide, CFCc, methane, nitrous oxide and other gases. Of these carbon dioxide contributes to 55% of the greenhouse effect. The pie chart on the next slide shows where this carbon dioxide comes from.

6 3. Intensive industrial practices are causing a build up of toxic wastes. Redistribution of heavy metals in the environment is causing toxic levels in some areas. (You will learn about biomagnification next day.) New compounds are being produced for industrial processes and having toxic effects on the environment. 7 Enhanced Greenhouse Effect Use your Student Monograph, Scholar book and other resources to discuss the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect. It should include: 1.What the Greenhouse effect is 2.What gases are causing the enhanced greenhouse effect and where do they come from? 3.The controversy surrounding the influences of man on global warming and evidence to support natural causes and man made causes. 4.The consequences of global warming on the environment.
