Presentation Skills Mr Burton

2 Agenda During today’s session you will learn about:
What a presentation is? Why are they important ? How to develop your presentation skills Easy to apply strategies to make the most of your presentation What makes a good and bad presentation

3 What is a presentation? A presentation is a noun and can be defined as: 1. an act of presenting. 2. the state of being presented. 3. a social introduction, as of a person at court. 4. an exhibition or performance, as of a play or film. 5. offering, delivering, or bestowal, as of a gift.

4 What is a presentation? Simply put, a presentation is a performance in which the presenter (you) give information about: A topic A product A service Or Drummond Community High School

5 Why are they important? Throughout the business and social communities, presentations are used to tell stories, win business, present strategies and develop skills. If you are good at delivering presentations then your audience will believe in you, your product/service and what you are telling them. An interview is a form of presentation

6 A good presentation What do you think was good about these presentations? Can you give reasons why they were successful presentations? What techniques can you identify? How would you use them?

7 The Six Cs Confidence Composure Clarity Communication Content
Competence

8 Confidence & Composure
The audience wants to listen to a confident presenter Audiences believe someone who is confident with the material By having composure, you are showing confidence. Signs of a lack of confidence and composure include: Fidgeting, swaying, jangling change, saying “umm”, and repeating yourself.

9 Clarity & Communication
Clear communication is vital You need your audience to know: What you are selling Why they should buy it What’s the benefit to them By the end of your presentation, the parents should be left in no doubt why they should send their children to DCHS.

10 Content Content is what you put into your presentation.
Keep it relevant Keep on task Keep it simple Know your subject, after all, YOU ARE THE EXPERT.

11 Competence Audiences will be more likely to be convinced by a presenter they believe knows their subject. Be prepared to answer a range of questions by thinking about the questions that people MIGHT ask before you give the presentation.

12 By following the 5 P Plan you will achieve the 6 Cs.

14 Planning In your early planning phase you will need to:
Identify your audience Define and refine your message Work out the features and benefits that will appeal to the audience. NB People are more likely to buy benefits than features.

15 Preparation Identify roles or parts for different members of the team.
Designate roles on strengths not weaknesses (not everybody needs to be part of the presentation team) Work out a time line that is realistic and within the guidelines of the task. Visit the room before hand, and check the equipment works.

16 Practice Practise in front of a mirror Practise at home
Practise with the group Practise with a sample audience and ask for feedback and where you can improve Practise the timings. You can NEVER practise TOO much.

17 Professionalism Always be Professional – from start to finish!
Speak to members of your team with respect. Disagree, discuss – don’t argue! Dress smartly – ties up, hoodies off etc! Treat your audience (your customer) with respect. If you don’t know an answer, say so and say that you will get the answer at a later time. Then, get the answer from an expert (teacher etc).

18 Performance Whilst practising you will have honed your delivery skills which will include the essential ingredients of a successful presentation: Eye contact Natural gestures Humour (if appropriate) The 6 Cs!

19 The Young Apprentice What do you think was good about these presentations? Can you give reasons why they were successful presentations? What techniques can you identify? How would you use them?

20 A bad presentation Now you should be able to identify what these presenters should have done better.
