Norman Sadeh – Carnegie Mellon University – DAML PI Meeting- Feb. 13, 2002 n Mobile devices have very limited input/output functionality n Mobile users face time-critical, goal-driven tasks l Looking for a nearby gas station l Getting battlefield status updates n Mobile users are subject to more distractions l Driving through busy intersections l Talking to colleagues l Facing enemy fire n … All this argues for the development of context-aware semantic web solutions Motivations

Norman Sadeh – Carnegie Mellon University – DAML PI Meeting- Feb. 13, 2002 Vision A collection of easily customizable, context-sensitive agents l Capable of leveraging any Web service u …with the proper semantic markup… l Capable of leveraging contextual ontologies l Capable of eliciting, learning and re-using user preferences to u Tailor outgoing requests (pull) and carry out tasks in a (semi)autonomous manner s Launch and forget u Anticipate future user needs/filter incoming information (push) l …and, above all, doing in so in a useful, unobtrusive manner l Technology has to be invisible

Norman Sadeh – Carnegie Mellon University – DAML PI Meeting- Feb. 13, 2002 Specific Objectives Extend Semantic Web tools and ontologies in support of: n Civilian mobile Internet scenarios: l Approaching 1 billion mobile phone users worldwide u Ideal to promote the broad uptake of Semantic Web technologies l In house expertise and ideal evaluation environment – CMUs campus u Campus as everyday life microcosm n Military mobile context-aware scenarios l DoD scenarios to be identified in the context of the 2002 DAML Experiment

Norman Sadeh – Carnegie Mellon University – DAML PI Meeting- Feb. 13, 2002 Planned Activities in 2002 n Campus-based Semantic Web demonstrator that leverages CMUs Wireless LAN and location-tracking technology l Ideal for rapid prototyping and early evaluation l Contextual attributes: Location, calendar activities, weather, social context, etc. l Context-sensitive preferences l Work: u DAML-S service descriptions and editing tool (in collaboration with others) u Specialized context-aware agents u Both push and pull functionality u Reusable rule-based preferences n 2002 DAML Experiment

Norman Sadeh – Carnegie Mellon University – DAML PI Meeting- Feb. 13, 2002 What we Plan to Deliver in 2002 n Extensions of DAML+OIL ontologies and DAML-S service descriptions l Capturing contextual attributes l Capturing context-sensitive preferences l Mobile service descriptions and specialized service editing & publishing tool(s) n Demonstration and evaluation of Semantic Web context-aware applications on CMUs campus n Contribution to 2002 DAML Experiment l e.g. Context-aware message filtering
8
Norman Sadeh – Carnegie Mellon University – DAML PI Meeting- Feb. 13, 2002 Progress Metrics n Usability as the ultimate success criterion l How difficult/easy is it to edit and publish new services? l How difficult/easy is to customize the agents? l Are the ontologies capable of properly capturing user preferences? l Are the resulting services actually helpful…or are they just annoying? n Scalability l Ability to interface with new mobile Internet services n Interactions with other DAML groups l DAML-S, rules, other relevant ontologies n Participation in DAML experiment
