eGY Liaison Report Kathy Fontaine kathy.fontaine@nasa.gov WGISS-23 Hanoi, Vietnam May 24, 2007

What is eGY? An initiative of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) Led by the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) Sponsored by –In-kind contributions from Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, NASA [Space Science Division], National Science Foundation, –Endorsements from IUGG, IAGA

Purpose Build upon the successes of I*Y (IGY, IPY, IHY, etc.) to provide a forum to collaboratively address the challenges of modern data management and integrative science –Distributed data –Cross-disciplinary data –Large, complex data sets, –Open data access and sharing, –Data, information, knowledge discovery –Data preservation and rescue –Interoperability –Data usability and quality –and more

Background The IGY of 1957-58 established effective, powerful principles of free and open data exchange in geoscience The last decade has seen development of new, cost-effective ways to acquire, store and exchange data Virtual Observatories offer the kind of forward impetus today that World Data Centers and the IGY offered 50 years ago Data access, sharing, and display are the common themes across all of the International Years (IYPE, IHY, IPY) The electronic Geophysical Year (eGY) is being incorporated into all the I*Ys and addresses key issues of data release, data discovery, and data preservation eGY – July 7, 2007 – December 31, 2008

Working Groups Virtual Observatory Working Group –Facilitating interoperability –Closely linked to the AGU focus group on informatics Best Practices for Data Management –What are the attributes of successful systems (including people) –Focus on access and usability –Initial effort sponsored by CODATA Data Integration and Knowledge Discovery –Truly interdisciplinary understanding of data and information Education and Outreach –Connecting teachers to virtual observatories

Participants Signatories and participants in eGY are drawn from: –National Academies of Science –National CODATA Committees –"International Year" initiative linked to the 50-year anniversary of IGY: IPY, IYPE, IHY, ILWS, CAWSES –Geoscience Societies such as the European Geosciences Union (EGU) –e-Science and digital network and digital library initiatives

Participants, contd. –ICSU –The GeoUnions is a new consortium for the Earth sciences comprising: IUGG-International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics IUGS-International Union of Geological Sciences IUSS-International Union of Social Sciences IGU-International Geographical Union ISPRS-International Soc. for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing –The World Data Centers –Global Observing bodies and programs (e.g., IGOSS, GEOS) –Science organizations: SCOSTEP, CODATA, etc.

WGISS Interest Charlie Barton attended WGISS-20, Kyïv –Introduced the concepts –Requested WGISS endorsement –WGISS agreed with principles but could not officially endorse –Agreed to establish liaison Liaison attends meetings and reports back –Recommend that continue through duration of eGY.

Activities Meeting March 13-14 2007, Boulder, CO –Discuss relationships with other organizations –Discuss meetings and other forums to present eGY concepts First European eGY Workshop hosted at GFZ-Potsdam Kick-off of eGY at IUGG in Perugia, Italy July 7 –In conjunction with IGY+50 celebration Russia-sponsored eGY meeting Meeting Feb 26-27, 2008 in Boulder to assess effort and plan closing event for December 2008.
