CEOS Working Group on Information Systems and Services - WGISS 3 Projects and Applications Subgroup Background o Framework for WGISS to work in partnership with selected international science and EO projects to test and develop information systems and services to meet their requirements. o Specific WTFs and Projects have been established to address the needs of individual projects. o WGISS sponsored projects will be demonstrated and improved in response to science and operational user requirements. o WTF and Project demonstrations advertise technical capabilities, promote science efforts, facilitate improvements, and encourage coordination of Information Systems and Services across the spectrum of EO space operations

5 WTF-GOFC (Former WTF)

WTF/GOFC Southeast Asia Fire Demonstration Terry Fisher - WGISS Vice Chair John Townshend – GOFC Chair November 6, 2001 CEOS Plenary in Kyoto

CEOS Working Group on Information Systems and Services - WGISS 7 WTF/GOFC Southeast Asia Fire Demonstration o WGISS Testbed Facility (WTF) o Rationale n The SE Asia fire demo provided WGISS with a test-bed target for focusing CEOS Agency contributions n Addresses GOFC concerns for land cover, fire susceptibility, active fires and burn scars o Elements n Data Discovery – Finding relevant data collections n Data Search – Acquiring distributed product archives for particular satellite images, maps, etc. n Data Access and Interuse – Integrating data products from many distributed archives

CEOS Working Group on Information Systems and Services - WGISS 8 Global Observations of Forest Cover Global Observations of Landcover Dynamics Panel of GTOS GOFC/GOLDs goals are to develop long term operational capabilities for forests and other land cover. Drivers Scientific understanding International Treaties and Conventions Forest/Natural Resources Management Conservation Ecosystem goods and services Fundamental information requirements of GOFC/GOLD Access to data for given geographic areas in a given time period Need for timely access to regional data sets Need to combine multiple and distributed data sources (including satellite data and in-situ data)

CEOS Working Group on Information Systems and Services - WGISS 9 WGISS Messages o CEOS agencies have vast quantities of data, systems, and other resources that are required by projects like GOFC o WGISS is working to make these resources accessible through a common set of discovery, search, access and interuse interfaces o Science and application communities (such as GOFC) can either use the common set of interfaces or build gateways to these interfaces o WGISS works closely with standards groups such as ISO TC211 and the OpenGis Consortium to ensure that the CEOS Agency data and tools are interoperable with national and international spatial data infrastructures and to facilitate the development of commercial off the shelf components that implement the common interfaces
