At the last meeting chairs proposed holding conference calls each call dedicated to a single subject chairs afterwards proposed every 3 rd Tues of the month at 8 AM Pacific Two calls were held both on subject of timing over MPLS IDs on this subject : draft-stein-tictoc-mpls-00 draft-davari-tictoc-1588overmpls-00 draft-jin-jounay-mpls-mldp-hsmp-01 (wasnt discussed) Still discussing requirements only brief discussion on encapsulation options next slides on open issues

Question : frequency or time (uncalibrated or calibrated) distribution ? Resolution : focus on time the feeling is that frequency is handled well enough today Reasoning : one of the main problems in networking is how to ensure symmetry (irrelevant for frequency distribution) highly precise frequency distribution is probably going to be carried out at the physical layer (e.g., SyncE) moderately precise frequency distribution is handled today using packet methods without MPLS-layer intervention.

Question : network service or over-the-top service ? Resolution : initially focus on network service Reasoning : user time distribution packets can be complex to recognize if SP can provide inexpensive time delivery service this potentially change how users operate customer must trust SP anyway, so full proventication is not a major step (although it will require protocol development).

Question : is an MPLS encapsulation needed at all ? Background : time may be solved at a layer lower than MPLS (Ethernet, OTN, SDH), and lower layers are usually better at time delivery than higher ones however, lower layer may not always available : –MPLS end-to-end path may be supported by concatenation of several disparate transport technologies (but hop-by-hop solution still works) MPLS SP may not have access to the lower underlying layer MPLS network elements may have no IP awareness No resolution has been reached on this question Suggestion : survey of potential users (SPs)
