1 What makes something alive ?

2 What are living things? There are certain criteria that determine if something is living. Do ALL 9 criteria have to be met? Yes, ALL 9 criteria must be met.

3 Living things are RE-CHARGED !!

4 R - Reproduce All living things produce offspring by reproduction.
Sexual Reproduction Asexual Reproduction

5 C - Cells Made of cells (the basic unit of life)
Contain DNA = genetic material Unicellular Multicellular Examples:

6 H - Homeostasis Homeostasis -The ability to maintain stable internal conditions separate from an outside environment. Example: The human body maintains an average temperature of 98.6 ºF.

7 R - Respond to stimuli A living organism will respond to an environmental condition called a stimulus. Helps maintain homeostasis. A plant growing in a specific direction due to a light stimulus.

8 G - Growth D - Development Getting Bigger / Increasing material
All of the changes that take place during the life of an organism. (Maturing) Growth rings in a tree Amoeba absorbing nutrients

9 E - Energy All living things obtain and use energy
Metabolism– all of the chemical reactions that take place within an organism

10 E – A-Adapt Evolve Adaptation – a characteristic of an organism that improves its chances of surviving in its environment Evolution – Change in a species over time due to the gradual accumulation of adaptations. (Organisms with more suitable adaptations are more likely to survive and reproduce) Example: Owls, and other nocturnal animals have evolved large eyes for better night vision.

11 ORGANIZATION OF LIFE Organism Organ system Organ Tissue Cell Molecule Atom

13 Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of life?
Ability to reproduce Maintains homeostasis Responds to stimulus Movement

14 All living things contain cell(s) & DNA.
True False

15 Which of the following is the smallest level of organization?
Molecule Atom Cell Organ

16 Which of the following is the largest level of organization?
Cell Organ system Organ Molecule

17 A person sweating after working out is an example of
Ability to reproduce Metabolism Response to stimulus Adaptation to environment

18 All of the chemical reactions that take place within an organism is called
Homeostasis Metabolism Reproduction Biology

19 The cell maintains a sodium ion concentration  between 135 and 145 mEq/L. This is an example of
Homeostasis Metabolism Reproduction Adaptation
