DIABETIC DYSLIPIDEMIA A MAJOR RISK FACTOR IN CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES
Banciu Andreea Maria Grigore Mihai Associated Professor: Minerva Boitan
2
INTRODUCTION Over the last 30 years, DM had changed from beeing associated with aging to one of the major causes of premature morbidity in most coutries.
3
introduction The mechanism by which Diabetes leads to these complications is complex and not yet fully underderstood, but involves: High glucose levels Abnormal lipid levels Major Diabetes complications are: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), nephropathy, retinopathy, amputation. CVD is the major complication responsable for more than 50 % and up to 80 % of deaths in people with Diabetes
5
Coronary Heart Disease
Cerebrovascular diseases Retinopathy Coronary Heart Disease Nephropathy Peripheral Vascular Disease Neuropathy Diabetic foot
6
Proportion of hospital bed days used for the treatment of diabetic complications

7
Matherials and Method A retrospective study including 100 patients from Sibiu Country Emergency Hospital 61 men 39 women
8
Matherials and method Type of Diabetes Urban 51, Rural 49 Treatment
II - 89 Urban 51, Rural 49 Treatment Insulin 61 Oral Antidiabetes 39
9
results The mean age of the population was 55.52 years
Range: years By age, the lot was devided in 4 groups: I (< 40 years) II (40 – 50 years) III (50 – 60 years) – the predominant group IV (> 60 years)

Results
11
results BMI (Body Mass Index) calculated by deviding weight in kilogrammes by the square of height in metres shown that over 60 % of patients had BMI > kg/m2, most of them are Type II Diabetes Mellitus patients. 60 % of patients are obese (moderate / severe / very severe) 21 % of patients are overweight (> 25 kg/m2) Mean BMI: 33.45 Mean BMI in men: 31.56 Mean BMI in women: 35.28

results
13
Lipid profile 58 % of patients had elevated Cholesterol levels
Over 50 % of patients had increased Triglycerides 41 % had increased LDL – Cholesterol 40 had decreased HDL - Cholesterol
14
Lipid profile
15
conclusions Besides Obesity, which is the principal risck for DM patients, hypertension, hypothyrodism and other comorbidities had a substantial risk for cardiovascular diseases
16
conclusions CVD is more frequent in men, the group of age between 50 – 60 years. Type II Diabetes Mellitus is more preditable to a CV risk Dyslipidemia is influenced by gender (men had more elevated Tryglicerides, decreased HDL – Cholesterol and descreased LDL – Cholesterol, comparing to women who had increased LDL – Cholesterol than men). The main CVD, possible complications of dyslipidemia of DM patient are: Coronary Heart Disease (41 %), Arteriopathy (16 %), Cerebrovascular Diseases (4 %).
