Warm-Up Journal Entry Topic: My Favorite Holiday What is your favorite holiday? Why do you love this holiday? What do you do on this holiday? Who do you celebrate this holiday with? What do you eat? Do you travel anywhere?
2
Latitude and Climate Zones
3
What is Latitude? Latitude is a system of parallel lines that measure distance north and south of the Equator.
4
What is climate? A climate is weather over a long period of time. Climate is what the weather is normally like in any place.
5
What lines of latitude are important for climate zones? The Equator, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, and the Arctic and Antarctic circles are the lines we use to divide the world into climate zones
6
Where are the climate zones? Polar Zone Temperate Zone Tropic Zone Arctic Circle Antarctic Circle Tropic of Cancer Tropic of Capricorn Equator
7
Where are the climate zones? The Polar Zones: north of the Arctic Circle, south of the Antarctic Circle
8
Where are the climate zones? The Temperate Zones: between the Arctic circle and the Tropic of Cancer and the Antarctic Circle and the Tropic of Capricorn.
9
Where are the climate zones? The Tropic Zones: between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
10
What are the climate zones like? The Polar Zones are very cold all year.
11
What are the climate zones like? The Temperate Zones have temperature that change depending on the season.
12
What are the climate zones like? The Tropic Zones are hot all year.
13
In the northern hemisphere, it is hot in summer and cold in winter. In December, it would be cold. In the southern hemisphere, it is cold in summer and hot in winter. So in December, it would be hot. How do the hemispheres affect the seasons in the temperate zones?
14
The temperate zones in the northern and southern hemispheres have opposite seasons because of the way the earth is tilted and how the sun’s rays hit the earth at different times of the year!
15
Why does day length vary??? Because the length of the day depends on latitude
16
Why is this important? We need to know about climate zones because they change how people live in different places.
