Luke 24:20-21 …how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel…

I Corinthians 15:14, 17 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!

1.What do the gospel writers record?  Roman guard, sealed tomb  Angels appear  Female disciples find tomb empty  Peter and John find tomb empty  Appearances – garden, road to Emmaus, upper room, others He is Risen

2. What makes their record believable?  The reluctance of the witnesses to believe He is Risen Luke 24:9-11 Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.

He is Risen John 20:13-16 Then they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?“ She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.“ Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?“ She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, "Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary!“ She turned and said to Him, "Rabboni!”

He is Risen John 20:24-25 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord.“ So he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."

 When and where they proclaimed the message He is Risen Acts 2:22-24 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know — Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.

He is Risen Acts 26:25-26 But he said, "I am not mad, most noble Festus, but speak the words of truth and reason. For the king, before whom I also speak freely, knows these things; for I am convinced that none of these things escapes his attention, since this thing was not done in a corner.

 Why they proclaimed the message He is Risen Acts 4:12, 19-20 “…Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.“ But Peter and John answered and said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.“

 The lack of a plausible, alternative explanation  The result of their preaching He is Risen Acts 17:6 …"These who have turned the world upside down have come here too…”

3. What should the resurrection of Jesus mean to me?  The completion of God’s plan He is Risen Luke 24:45-46 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,

He is Risen Romans 1:3-4 …concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Hebrews 2:14-16 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage

 The vindication of Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God He is Risen John 20:29-31 Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.“ And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

 Our Victory made real He is Risen I Corinthians 15:20-26 51-57 Philippians 3:8-11
