8 Guided Reading Before Reading –Introduce / review comprehension skills, picture walks to make predictions, KWL Charts During Reading –Reading of story selection using various reading configurations Echo reading, partner reading, three ring circus, choral reading, small / flexible groups After Reading –Practice comprehension skills through various activities (practice pages, projects, writing, etc.)

10 AR – Accelerated Reader –Must know 100 Dolch words to begin and have good comprehension when reading –Students average taking 1 AR test / week SSR – Self Selected Reading –Begins with teacher modeling early in year and progresses from 5 – 7 minutes of SSR during the first half of the year to about 15 minutes of SSR in the second half of the school year. –Teacher reads, students read, students share AR / SSR

16 Benchmarks 140 Dolch Words Fluency, can read 40-60 words per minute of grade level text. All Reading competencies must be satisfactory. In Writing, students must be satisfactory in developing and organizing ideas. In Math, students must be satisfactory in problem solving, communicates math reasoning, and number sense. In Science and Social Studies, students must be at least inconsistent / in progress in all competencies.

19 Wee Deliver Brick Mill implemented a school mail system called Wee Deliver in January 2008. Several other elementary schools have a system in place too. Students can send mail to anyone within the Appoquinimink School District. At BME, mail is picked up and delivered by Fourth grade students two times per week. Wee Deliver encourages traditional friendly letter writing, while emphasizing correct letter writing format.

21 Summer Suggestions Practice reading and writing Kindergarten sight words. Keep a journal (kid writing). Read to your child. Have your child “help” you read. Visit the library. Complete summer reading requirements.
