Gangsters, corrupt politicians, fascists, and war profiteers. 5. What were the first villains Superman fought? 6. What can we chart/connect the popularity of superheroes to in America? The rise and fall of public confidence and sense of well- being. 7. In the 1980’s, who were the villains Batman fought? Drug gangs, smugglers, and assorted other street thugs.
