Student level: Form 1 Class duration: 45 minutes Language focus: writing diary entries, recalling events in first person narrative.
3
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to : …identify the features of a diary entry; …put oneself in someone else’s shoes; …write a diary entry from a different perspective; …read with a critical mind; and …get enjoyment from and take pleasure in reading.
4
What genre is this book? Who is the protagonist (the main guy)? What happened after Greg and Rowley signed up for Safety Patrol?
5
Try to listen to the teacher read with proper emotions – feel how Greg feels.
6
What did Greg do? Did Greg get punished? What happened to Rowley? What is the lesson learnt for Greg?
8
What if you were Rowley? How would you feel if you were cheated like him? Betrayed? Trusted the wrong friend? Hate Greg? Lost faith in friendship?
9
What are the features of a diary entry? Who is it meant to be written for? Formal or informal? What do you write about in a diary entry? Sample of diary: I think I might just know what this is all about. I decided to have some fun with the kids. I knew if I confessed, I'd lose my hot chocolate privileges.
10
Get in a group of 4 and write (and draw pictures) from Rowley’s perspective…
11
Again, read aloud your emotions.
12
So… what have you learnt in this lesson?
