Undergraduate Education Committee Thomas Chase William Durfee Susan Mantell Virgil Marple (Chair) James Ramsey Terrence Simon Ephram Sparrow Paul Strykowski

Charge to the Committee Consider implementing the highest priority items set by the “2009 Task Force on Undergraduate Education in ME” (10/5/09) 1.Include a design project during every year of the undergraduate experience 2.Extend the Senior Design Project to a two semester course

Summary of Proposed Changes 1.CSci 1113 (Intro C/C++) structured programming content to be integrated into the ME curriculum rather than be delivered in a stand alone CSci course 2.ME 2011 (Intro to ME) has been expanded into two new courses, ME 1011 (Intro To ME design) (2 cr freshman yr) and ME 2012 (ME Design) (4 cr sophomore yr) 3.IE 4521 (Stats, Qual, Reliability) moved from Junior yr to Sophomore yr (IE 2521) and credits reduced from 4 to 3

Proposed changes cont. 4.Thermal Sci I, II, and III have been renamed Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, and Heat Transfer & Thermal Design 5.ME 3331 (Thermal Sci. I) changed to ME 2331 (Thermodynamics) to reflect its offering in the Sophomore year 6.ME 3333 credits increased from 3 to 4 and name changed to ME 3334 (Heat Transfer & Thermal Design)

Proposed changes cont. 7.ME 3221 name change from Design & Manf. I to Failure Analysis & Manufacturing Processes with Lab 8.ME 3222 name change from Design & Manf. II to Mechanisms & Machine Component Design 9.New course ME 4056, Engineering Modeling, (4 cr) added and one Tech. Elective dropped 10.Total credit requirement for graduation decreased from 128 to 126 (credits taught in ME increase from 53 to 56)

Pop Quiz! What is “Design”? a) Design process (customer requirements, specifications, concept gen & selection, detail design) b) Solid mechanics, kinematics & controls c) Parameter studies to optimize engineering systems d) Application of engineering theory to solve real-world problems

“Straw Man” ME Flowchart

“Straw Man” ME/IE Classes

New Lower Division Classes

New LD Design Classes Intro to CAD Intro to MATLAB Student-selected design experience w/alumni- directed lab –Energy; i.e., solar water heater –Reverse engineering –EWB project –Machine shop experience –… Structured programming Microprocessors Major design project: grand societal challenge or robot ME 1011 (2 cr Freshman) ME 2012 (4 cr Sophomore)

Distributed Programming Experience Csci 1113 (Intro to C/C++) replaced by: 1.ME 1011: Intro to MATLAB 2.ME 2012: Structured Programming 3.ME 3222: MATLAB mech synth (in place) 4.ME 3281: MATLAB simulation (in place) 5.ME 4056: Advanced MATLAB simulation Undergraduate Education

New & Expanded UD Classes

Calculus Physics Chemistry Biology Solid Mechanics Kinematics Controls Fluid Mechanics Thermodynamics Heat Transfer Fundamentals Engineering Modeling Mechanisms and Machine Component Design Thermal Design Engineering Modeling ME 3331 (3 cr) ME 3332 (3 cr) ME 3334 (4 cr) ME 3221 (4 cr) ME 3222 (4 cr) ME 3281 (4 cr) ME 4056 (4 cr) Design Projects ME 4057W (4 cr) fundamentals integration

ME 3334: Heat Transfer & Thermal Design Expand ME 3333 to include a thermal design project experience (analogous to project in Mechanisms & Machine Component Design class)

ME 4056: Engineering Modeling Model real engineering systems with tools such as MATLAB simulations and finite elements Interpret & critically evaluate modeling results by applying estimation & similitude Apply to real-world systems: case studies of past Capstone Design projects Taught by tag-team of 1-”Design” & 1-”Thermal Sciences” prof “Capstone modeling” class Better prepare students to model new project in ME 4057W

Five Tier 1 Recommendations of UG Task Force 1.Design project every year 2.Extend Senior Design to a two semester course 3.Encourage students to participate in student-driven design projects (e.g. solar car, solar house, Engineers Without Borders, ASME Student Design Contest, …) 4.Utilize alumni or industry presenters in seminars or lectures 5.Establish a “Professional Development Day” to increase interactions between students, advisers and employers (students can talk with faculty, industry reps, grad students, International Programs reps, etc.) Undergraduate Education

UG Ed Strategic Objectives 1.To improve the student experience, thereby growing the attractiveness and reputation of the undergraduate program Design (global interp) throughout the curriculum 2.To graduate students who are highly attractive as new hires, thereby placing them in the best jobs on a national scale Better modelers, better estimators, 2-semester capstone experience 3.To improve the diversity of the student population Exciting LD experiences in Mech Eng Undergraduate Education
