Section 5.3: The East India Trading Company
2
The British-controlled East India Trading Company sold tea The company had to pay a tax to Great Britain on the tea before shipping it to other places It could not afford to pay the tax, yet it would be ruined if it did not sell the tea
3
British Tea Tax Frederick North, Great Britain’s prime minister, came up with a plan –He wanted to ship the tea to America and then force the colonies to pay a duty A duty is a tax placed on goods brought into a certain country or region Lord North expected his plan to save the East India Trading Company from financial disaster and to bring in more revenue for Great Britain
4
The colonists refused to pay this tax –They were afraid that soon all British merchants would pay no tax –As a result, the American competitors would go out of business –Samuel Adams organized the tea merchants who agreed to cancel all orders for tea
5
Boston Tea Party A ship carrying tea arrived in Boston’s harbor in early December 1773 Samuel Adams and the colonists were determined to keep the tea from being unloaded –A group of colonists dressed as Mohawk Indians boarded the ship on the night of December 16, 1773 More than 300 chests containing 90,000 pounds of tea were dumped into the harbor The colonial resistance to British taxation had spread throughout the colonies

Boston Tea Party
7
British Reaction to Boston Tea Party Some colonists did not agree with the actions taken in Boston Many felt that dumping tea, burning a ship, or allowing tea to rot were not proper ways to protest
8
The British responded to the colonists’ actions by passing the Intolerable Acts in 1774 –These acts allowed Great Britain to close the port of Britain to all trade, ban town meetings, and house British troops in people’s homes –The act said that British soldiers accused of breaking the law would be tried in Great Britain –Parliament also passed the Quebec Act This act extended the Canadian province of Quebec into the Ohio Valley
