“Be Done With Sin” 1 Peter 4:1-6 December 6, 2009

I. Say “Farewell” to sin (1-2) Having a suffering attitude clarifies our priorities (1). – Christ overcame the power of sin by his suffering on the cross. – We are to have the same attitude that Jesus had towards suffering.

Philippians 2:5-8 “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!”

I. Say “Farewell” to sin (1-2) We are not to live the rest of our lives for evil human desires (2). – Sinful desires should no longer dominate our behavior. – God’s will should be the determining factor in life.

II. Secure freedom from sin’s control (3-4). A sinful lifestyle is past for believers (3). – Before Christ, believers were just like unbelievers in their behaviors. Debauchery – excessive indulgence Lust – strong sexual desire or appetite for sin Drunkenness Orgies – wild parties with excessive drinking and indiscriminate sexual activity

II. Secure freedom from sin’s control (3-4). A sinful lifestyle is past for believers (3). – Before Christ, believers were just like unbelievers in their behaviors. Carousing – noisy and excessive revelry Detestable idolatry – detestable in light of what Christ has done – These things are no longer a part of the believer’s life after he has been forgiven.

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation (creature); the old is gone, the new has come!”

II. Secure freedom from sin’s control (3-4). A change occurs at conversion (4). – We are new creatures in Christ. – Our old friends think that it is strange we no longer do the things we did before. They don’t understand They often ridicule and oppose us

Hebrews 9:27 “Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,”

2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”

Revelation 20:11-12 “Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.”

III. Stay focused on being delivered from sin (5-6). Everyone will give an account to God (5). – We will all stand before God in judgment. For the believer, it is at the judgment seat of Christ. For the unbeliever, it is at the Great White Throne judgment. – He will judge the living and the dead.

III. Stay focused on being delivered from sin (5-6). The preaching of the Gospel has a desired result (6). – For judgment of sin – To bring eternal life
